Djed Spence Completes €30 Million Move to Inter Milan

Djed Spence has drawn a firm line under his Tottenham Hotspur career and stepped into a new arena, completing a move to Inter Milan in a deal worth around €30 million.

The England right-back has signed a five-year contract with the Italian giants and is expected to slot in as the long-term replacement for Denzel Dumfries, who left for Real Madrid earlier this summer.

From Bilbao to the San Siro

Spence leaves north London with his reputation significantly enhanced. He played all eight games for England at the 2026 World Cup, starting both the semifinal defeat to Argentina and the third-place playoff win over France, performances that sharpened interest across Europe and boosted his market value.

At Spurs, he amassed 85 appearances, with the club’s Europa League triumph standing out as the defining moment of his four-year spell. That success, and specifically “that night in Bilbao,” was at the heart of an emotional farewell message he posted on social media as the transfer edged towards completion.

“A special chapter comes to an end, It's been some journey, with plenty of memories, moments and experiences that I'll carry with me for forever, especially that night in Bilbao,” Spence wrote. He went on to thank staff, teammates “who've become family” and the supporters, signing off with a promise that Spurs will “always have a place in my heart” and the familiar “COYS !!!”

De Zerbi’s reshuffle

Behind the sentiment, the decision felt ruthless. ESPN had already reported that head coach Roberto De Zerbi did not see Spence as central to his plans for the coming season. The picture became even clearer last month when De Zerbi publicly labelled Pedro Porro the “best in the world” in the right-back position.

That endorsement left little doubt about the hierarchy on Tottenham’s right flank and opened the door for Spurs to cash in on a player whose value had surged after his World Cup displays.

Spence originally arrived from Middlesbrough in July 2022 in a £19m deal, structured with add-ons linked to international milestones. One of those clauses was triggered when he made his England debut in September 2025, a moment that sources say delivered an extra £1m to Middlesbrough. Less than a year later, he was a surprise but ultimately successful inclusion in Thomas Tuchel’s World Cup squad.

The full-back has already had a taste of Italian football, spending six months on loan at Genoa in 2024. Inter now hand him a far bigger stage and a prominent role in a side that expects to compete deep into the Champions League.

Spurs reshape at both ends

While Spence heads for Milan, Tottenham’s own rebuild continues at pace. The club have brought in Andy Robertson on a free transfer, with the former Liverpool defender expected to play a major role at left-back. His arrival sets up a direct battle with Destiny Udogie, whose involvement will depend on proving his fitness after a difficult preseason.

The changing of the guard has not stopped there. Only hours before confirming Spence’s departure, Spurs announced that club captain Cristian Romero had completed a move to Atlético Madrid, another major pillar of the dressing room stepping away just as De Zerbi begins to mould the squad in his image.

One era at Tottenham is clearly closing. For Spence, the next one begins under the lights of San Siro.
