Jeff Bezos-Backed Group Nears Deal for One-Third Stake in Liverpool FC

A group of investors including Amazon founder Jeff Bezos is close to finalizing a deal to acquire about one-third ownership of Premier League club Liverpool FC, sources say.

Sky News reports that the investment consortium is led by Amit Bhatia, who is connected to India’s steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal through marriage. The group also features Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin.

Fenway Sports Group (FSG), the current owners of Liverpool, acknowledged the interest from Bhatia’s team last month. A spokesperson for FSG told AFP, "An investment consortium led, managed, and represented by Amit Bhatia has expressed interest in making a strategic minority investment in Liverpool Football Club."

Bhatia was previously involved with Championship side Queens Park Rangers as a shareholder.

The consortium is reportedly nearing a deal to buy roughly a 33% stake in the club, with FSG expected to announce the agreement soon.

Jeff Bezos, aged 62, holds a net worth estimated at over $280 billion according to Forbes. Saverin’s fortune stands around $33 billion. Although Bezos considered bids for NFL teams like the Seattle Seahawks and Washington Commanders in the past, he opted not to pursue those opportunities.

This move marks another example of growing American investment in English football. The valuation for Liverpool in this transaction is said to be about $6 billion.

Fenway Sports Group acquired Liverpool in 2010 for £300 million ($405 million) and sold a minority portion last year to US private equity firm Dynasty Equity.

The club clinched the Premier League title in the 2024/25 season under Dutch manager Arne Slot, who was dismissed in May following a challenging campaign.
