Jason Knight Breaks Silence: Ireland Should Not Face Israel Amid Gaza Conflict

Jason Knight has become the first Republic of Ireland player to publicly state that the upcoming game against Israel should not proceed. Speaking after Ireland's 1-0 loss to Kosovo in Pristina, Knight shared his candid views ahead of a planned team discussion on Friday about the controversial fixture scheduled for Sunday in Debrecen.

Controversial Venue and Rising Protests

The match, unusual because the two nations are not at war, will be played behind closed doors once again, this time in Backa Topola, Serbia, on October 4. The Stop The Game protest group has amplified calls for a boycott due to the ongoing conflict in Gaza. Despite widespread criticism, UEFA has permitted Israel to continue participating in international fixtures, even after a United Nations independent commission accused Israel of genocide in Gaza.

Knight Reflects on the Team’s Position

“Look, it’s difficult, the manager, and Dara, and Nathan [Collins] spoke well about it, I don’t think the game should be going ahead but it is going ahead,” Knight said. “We’ll have a deeper talk about it and what that means, we’ll get our thoughts as a group and go from there.”

He added that the situation has been heavily discussed within the squad, especially among senior players, to determine their next steps. Knight described the coming conversations as an opportunity to understand the implications and consequences of playing the match.

“I am quite experienced. None of us have gone through this scenario before but I’d like to think I’m experienced, thick skin and can get through most things and that is what I will try and do. I’ll try and focus on the football as much as I can. I’ll give my view and my thoughts on when I see fit, but I’ll be trying to focus on the football as much as possible.”
