Jamal Musiala Addresses Neurological Diagnosis and Recovery

Jamal Musiala says he is “doing well” after being diagnosed with a neurological issue that caused two worrying on-field episodes in the space of four days.

The Bayern Munich midfielder appeared to collapse off the ball during Saturday’s friendly against RB Leipzig, a moment that immediately raised alarm given his status as one of the club’s key players. He was still included in Vincent Kompany’s squad for Bayern’s final pre-season warm-up against Heidenheim on Tuesday, a sign the club’s medical staff were comfortable for him to continue.

But the concern returned almost instantly. Minutes after coming off the bench in the second half, Musiala had to leave the pitch again, this time escorted by Bayern’s medical team.

Later, the Germany international chose to address the situation directly on his Instagram channel, outlining the diagnosis and trying to calm the reaction around him.

“First things first – I’m doing well. I’m especially grateful for all your messages and your support,” he wrote, before explaining that he has been diagnosed with “brief, temporary but readily treatable absences, which are caused by a neurological dysfunction.”

Those “absences”, he said, triggered the episodes seen against Leipzig and then again in Heidenheim. They look alarming from the outside. For Musiala, they have become something he now has to manage.

“I know that they may seem scary at first glance – but for me, they are currently part of my everyday life. I am receiving the best possible medical treatment for this and I am very optimistic. FC Bayern and the people close to me are always by my side and supporting me on this journey.

“The important thing is that there is no further health risk beyond this,” he continued, stressing that specialists are closely involved in every step.

Musiala also made clear that carrying on with his career is not a reckless decision, but one taken in concert with experts and with his own eyes open.

“In close consultation and regular communication with the specialists, it was my personal wish to face this challenge and, with the approval of the neurological specialists, to continue doing what helps me most in my recovery: simply getting on with my everyday life and continuing to pursue my passion of playing football.

“I have taken responsibility for that decision. Overall, I have a very good feeling and I’m on the right track. What helps me most on this journey is continuing to chase victories and titles with my team, with your fantastic support.”

For all the detail he chose to share, Musiala drew a clear line around how much more he is prepared to discuss publicly.

“I hope this helps you understand me a little better. At the same time, I ask for your understanding that I would like to continue keeping this matter within the circle of my closest confidants, the club and the experts.”

Bayern now move into the new season knowing their 21-year-old star intends to fight on, under strict medical guidance, determined to keep deciding games rather than being defined by a diagnosis.
