Andoni Iraola Should Take a Risk on Forgotten Liverpool Talent
Liverpool aims to improve markedly this season after finishing fifth in the Premier League last year. That disappointing finish led to the dismissal of manager Arne Slot. The fact that Liverpool dropped so far just one season after winning the title surprised many. Despite Slot's belief that he would keep his job, parting ways seemed best for both sides.
Andoni Iraola was brought in to replace Slot and, even though Liverpool remains unbeaten across all competitions, the squad still looks like it has untapped potential. Iraola has favored certain players, but now may be the moment to try someone less relied upon.
Striker Injuries Force a New Approach
With Alexander Isak and Cody Gakpo sidelined by recent injuries and Hugo Ekitike still out, Liverpool is stretched thin up front. While Jayden Danns and Lewis Koumas could fill in as strikers if needed, neither seems an ideal long-term solution.
This situation could open the door for Federico Chiesa to finally stake a claim. His 2025-26 season has been plagued by injuries, and although he naturally plays on the wing, switching him into a striker role might be the fresh start he needs.
Chiesa has proven goal-scoring ability. Even if his pace has dipped somewhat, having teammates like Rio Ngumoha and Victor Munoz supporting him on the flanks could help him thrive in this new position.
Chiesa as a Stopgap Until Key Players Return
Liverpool missing Gakpo and Isak in the starting lineup looks worrying since those two have been among their strongest attackers. Gakpo, in particular, has been arguably Liverpool's standout performer, contributing six goals that earned crucial points.
For Liverpool to contend seriously for the title, they need solid backups who can perform at the same level when starters are unavailable. Many squads have clear first and second choices per position, but strong teams adapt and still win games.
Chiesa's time at Liverpool has been difficult so far. Still, if Iraola takes a chance and gives him consistent minutes up front, Chiesa might finally prove his value and revive his career.
