Inter Milan Pursues Curtis Jones as Liverpool Considers Summer Sale
Inter Milan have stepped up their pursuit of Curtis Jones, with the Italian club working to strike a deal for the Liverpool midfielder before the transfer window closes, according to sources speaking to Football Insider.
The 25-year-old is understood to be open to the move. After years on the fringes at Anfield, he wants a starting role, not another season defined by rotation and cameos.
From academy hope to expendable asset?
Jones’ story at Liverpool has never been short on promise. Breaking through in the 2018-19 campaign, he gradually carved out a place in the first-team squad and has been a regular presence for much of the last six seasons. In four of those, he has made at least 34 appearances in all competitions and played his part in a side that lifted major honours, including a Premier League title.
Yet the numbers tell a more unforgiving tale about his status. Last season, in the 2025-26 Premier League campaign, Jones featured in 34 matches, but only 18 of those were starts as Liverpool slipped to fifth in the table. He was involved, but rarely central. Present, but not pivotal.
That lack of influence carried a cost. When Thomas Tuchel named his England squad for the 2026 World Cup this summer, Jones was left out. For a player who once looked like a long-term international prospect, the omission underlined where he currently sits in the pecking order.
A midfielder caught in the middle
The statistical profile backs up the sense of a player stuck between roles. As of 5 August, via Fotmob, Jones averaged 0.05 goals per game, with a 0.13 xG, 1.07 shots, 0.09 assists, 0.98 chances created, 4.76 duels won at a 50.7 per cent success rate, 1.87 tackles and 0.84 interceptions.
Those are solid numbers, but not standout in either direction. He does a bit of everything, but not enough of anything to demand undroppable status in a side chasing titles on multiple fronts.
At Liverpool, that matters. Dominik Szoboszlai offers clear attacking thrust. Ryan Gravenberch brings stronger defensive presence. Jones sits somewhere in between, and that in-between space can be a brutal place to live at an elite club.
So if Liverpool decide to cash in, few among the Anfield crowd will be shocked. For the club, he represents a homegrown player who could command a significant fee. For Jones, a move to San Siro offers a chance to reset his career in a league that often rewards technically sound, tactically flexible midfielders.
If the deal goes through, he would become Liverpool’s first major outgoing of the summer, with Andoni Iraola yet to sanction a significant sale for a fee.
Gakpo interest adds another layer
Jones may not be the only Liverpool attacker or midfielder facing a crossroads. Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly made Cody Gakpo their top target this summer as they look to sharpen their forward line.
The Dutch international’s standing at Liverpool could come under pressure after the arrival of Victor Munoz, with Bradley Barcola also potentially heading to Anfield. If both come in, the competition for attacking minutes intensifies sharply.
Sensing an opportunity, Spurs are aiming to move for Gakpo during this window, hoping that Liverpool’s reshuffle in the final third opens the door.
For now, there are more questions than answers around departures at Anfield. Inter’s push for Jones is the most advanced, Gakpo’s situation is being watched closely, and the window is ticking down.
Liverpool are balancing evolution with risk. Who they choose to let go over the coming weeks will say as much about Iraola’s vision as any signing they make.
