Inter’s interest in Curtis Jones has stopped being a rumour and turned into a long-running storyline. Eight months on from the first contact, the Serie A champions are still circling the Liverpool midfielder, and they are doing it for one man in particular: Cristian Chivu.
This is the coach’s hand-picked target. Not a name pushed by agents, not a convenient market opportunity. Chivu has made it clear inside the club that Jones is the midfielder he wants to drop into his system.
Chivu’s ideal piece

Inter already have players who can shuttle, pass and press, but the Englishman, in the eyes of the technical staff, stitches those traits together in a way that gives the team something different.
He can operate between the lines, carry the ball through pressure and still read the game well enough to fit into a tightly drilled structure. That mix has convinced Chivu that Jones would slide naturally into his tactical setup rather than need a long adaptation curve.
Omission that raised eyebrows
The noise around the deal spiked when Jones did not feature in Liverpool’s friendly against Monaco. The club cited a hip problem. Officially, that is the story.
Supporters, though, were not convinced. An absence in pre-season for a player already surrounded by transfer talk rarely passes quietly, and the explanation only stoked the idea that a parting of ways is getting closer.
Inside the club, the distance between player and hierarchy is growing. Jones has already told Liverpool he will not sign a contract extension. That stance hands Inter leverage: they know time is on their side.
A player pushing the move
Jones is not sitting back and waiting for the market to decide his fate. He has, according to reports, rejected approaches from several other clubs to keep the path clear for a move to Italy.

The valuation gap
Desire, though, does not pay transfer fees. The major obstacle remains Liverpool’s asking price.
Inter, already heavy in midfield numbers, are reluctant to match the Premier League side’s valuation. Committing a large fee while the department is overstocked would strain both the wage bill and the squad balance, and the hierarchy are wary of moving too aggressively without first creating space.
So the club sit in a familiar modern position: a coach demanding a specific signing, a willing player, and an account sheet that refuses to bend easily.
Waiting game or decisive push?
Inter have mapped out two possible routes. If they cannot reach a deal with Liverpool before the end of the summer window, they are ready to wait.
Jones’s contract situation opens the door to a pre-contract agreement in January, which would allow him to walk into San Siro on a free transfer. That option carries its own risk — other clubs could re-enter the race, Liverpool could change strategy — but it would protect Inter from overpaying now.
On the other side of the equation, Beppe Marotta and Piero Ausilio are exploring ways to raise funds and clear room. Should players like Davide Frattesi or Kristjan Asllani depart in the coming weeks, Inter could redirect those resources into an improved offer that gets closer to Liverpool’s demands.
For the moment, the story hangs in the balance. Chivu has made his choice. Jones has made his. The question now is whether Inter’s board will move boldly to close the deal this summer, or gamble that waiting until January will still leave the door to Anfield open.
