India Claims Men's Cricket Gold at 2023 Asian Games in Hangzhou

India, led by captain Ruturaj Gaikwad, captured the gold medal in men's cricket during the 2023 Asian Games held in Hangzhou. Entering the tournament at the quarterfinal stage, India demonstrated strong performances throughout their matches.

Path to Victory

In the quarterfinals, India's team comfortably defeated Nepal by 23 runs, advancing to the semifinals. The semifinal match saw India overpower Bangladesh with ease to reach the final round.

The final against Afghanistan was cut short due to persistent rain. Afghanistan reached 112 for 5 in 18.2 overs before the game was halted. With no chance to complete the match, the tournament's seeding rules were applied, awarding the gold medal to India as the higher-ranked team prior to the final. Afghanistan, appearing in their third consecutive men's cricket final at the Asian Games, took home silver once again. Bangladesh earned the bronze medal.

Medal Winners

  • Gold: India
  • Silver: Afghanistan
  • Bronze: Bangladesh

Looking Ahead to Asian Games 2026

As defending champions, India will compete in the 2026 Asian Games hosted across Aichi and Nagoya. Both India and Pakistan have secured direct entry into the quarterfinals. Yet, a recent warm-up match against Japan showed a close contest, with India narrowly winning by just two runs in a rain-shortened five-over game. This raised questions about India's form heading into the next tournament.
