India vs West Indies 2nd ODI: Shubman Gill's 223 and Rohit Sharma's Century Power India to Record Chase of 406

Historic Victory in Guwahati as India Overcomes West Indies' Massive Total

At Barsapara Cricket Stadium, India achieved their highest-ever ODI chase by reaching a target of 406 runs set by the West Indies. The match on Wednesday ended with an eight-wicket victory for India, highlighted by remarkable performances from captain Shubman Gill and Rohit Sharma.

West Indies Sets a New High Score with Three Centuries

The West Indies posted an imposing total of 405 for seven wickets, their highest ODI score to date. This innings featured three centuries:

  • John Campbell: 101 runs off 68 balls, including 9 fours and 5 sixes
  • Shai Hope: 104 runs from 94 balls, hitting 8 fours and 3 sixes
  • Amir Jangoo: 114 runs in 77 deliveries, striking 13 fours and 3 sixes

This effort surpassed their previous record of 389 against England in 2019. The pitch was flat and the Indian pace attack, still inexperienced, struggled to contain the onslaught. Among the bowlers, Kuldeep Yadav stood out with figures of 2 wickets for 65 runs.

Record-Breaking Chase Led by Gill and Sharma

India’s reply was explosive from the start, with opening partners Gill and Rohit Sharma putting together a 255-run stand, the second-highest opening partnership for India in ODIs.

  • Rohit Sharma: Scored 101 runs off 75 balls with 10 fours and 6 sixes; his 35th ODI century came at a strike rate of 134.67. He reached his hundred in 72 balls before being dismissed LBW by Jayden Seales.
  • Shubman Gill: Finished unbeaten on 223 runs from 133 balls, including multiple boundaries and sixes. His double century is the fastest in ODI history, reaching 200 runs in just 117 balls. This is the highest individual score by any captain in ODI cricket.

Sharma’s century marked several milestones: he became the third Indian after Virat Kohli and Sachin Tendulkar to surpass 12,000 ODI runs. At 39 years and 153 days old, he also became the oldest player to hit an ODI hundred on Indian soil, breaking Sunil Gavaskar’s record. Gill's innings stands as only the second time a player has scored multiple double hundreds in ODIs, the first being Sharma himself.

Finishing the Chase

After Sharma’s dismissal, Virat Kohli came in but couldn’t continue the momentum, scoring 29 before getting out attempting a ramp shot. With Ruturaj Gaikwad unbeaten on 31, Gill guided India to the target in 43.3 overs with 39 balls remaining.

  • Final Scores:
  • India: 406/2 in 43.3 overs
  • West Indies: 405/7
