Ilkay Gundogan Drives GSS Bid for Montpellier Sale

Montpellier HSC, Ligue 1 champions not so long ago and now marooned in the second tier, stand on the brink of a major ownership shake-up – with a familiar Premier League name involved in the talks.

According to L’Équipe, British investment fund GSS are deep in negotiations to buy into the club, and former Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan is part of the group driving the bid. Ex-Arsenal, Burnley and Ipswich Town player Daniel Karbassiyoon is also involved.

Nicollin’s reluctant opening

The process began months ago. In April, word first emerged of an unnamed British buyer circling Montpellier. The backdrop was bleak.

Relegated to Ligue 2 for the 2025/26 season, La Paillade failed to bounce straight back. They did not even reach the promotion play-offs, sharing the same fate as Stade de Reims, who had dropped with them. For a club that once stood at the summit of French football, the descent has been jarring.

Owner Laurent Nicollin knew the slide could not continue unchecked. During the 2024/25 campaign he went public, calling for fresh capital and sending a detailed, ten-page dossier to major French investment banks. The message inside was blunt.

“We are throwing a hook into the sea,” Nicollin wrote, making clear he did not *want* to sell outright. But the realities of the balance sheet and the sporting decline forced him to confront a scenario he had long resisted. He accepted that he might have to slip into the role of minority shareholder to keep Montpellier competitive. “Our fall has to be less painful at the end of the year,” he added, a stark line that captured the urgency of the situation.

Deal closing in

That hook appears to have found a bite. Talks with GSS have accelerated, and L’Équipe report that an agreement between the fund and Nicollin is now drawing closer.

Key details remain unresolved. It is not yet clear whether GSS will complete a full takeover or acquire only a minority stake alongside Nicollin. What is clear is that Gundogan is a central figure in the GSS-led project, lending both football credibility and international profile to the bid. Karbassiyoon’s presence adds another layer of football know-how from the English game.

For Montpellier, the stakes could hardly be higher. The club stands at a crossroads: cling to the old model and risk further stagnation in Ligue 2, or open the door to outside money and a new power structure.

If GSS and Nicollin can finalise terms, La Paillade may soon be run under a very different banner – with one of Europe’s most decorated modern midfielders helping to shape what comes next.
