Ilia Topuria Levels Serious Claim Against Justin Gaethje After UFC Defeat
Ilia Topuria broke his silence on social media with a strong accusation directed at Justin Gaethje. This follows the first loss of Topuria's career, which happened in a brutal fight back in June.
The Spanish-Georgian fighter entered the UFC Freedom 250 event as the clear favorite, but the fight turned heavily in Gaethje’s favor after the second round. The American inflicted serious damage with a left-right combo in the third round, forcing an extended break where doctors considered stopping the fight.
Despite medical advice, referee Marc Goddard allowed the fight to continue due to concerns about Topuria’s eyesight. Eventually, Topuria's corner stopped the fight, handing Gaethje a TKO victory in the main event.
After winning the UFC lightweight title, Gaethje was celebrated by former US President Donald Trump inside the Octagon, marking both Trump's 80th birthday and the nation’s 250th anniversary.
Topuria left the cage with non-displaced fractures to both orbital bones, his right eye suffering more damage. This injury raises concerns about potential risks if he returns to fighting too soon. Nonetheless, Topuria is ready to compete again and made his intentions clear publicly.
Topuria’s Bold Statement on X
Returning to the platform for the first time since their bout, Topuria wrote: "Final medical tests done. I’m back. To all the clowns who’ve been talking s*** and counting me out this whole time, here I am. Now let’s see who’s got the balls. Thanks to everyone for the support. Next time I’ll make sure they check Justin’s gloves so he doesn’t put anything weird on them. See you soon."
Justin Gaethje responded swiftly, dismissing the claim with: "94 days and the best you could come up with is a lame excuse. As terrible as your last performance. Do better, kid."
Gaethje further addressed the allegation during a conversation with a fan on X, saying: "People don't believe that. I've done that to everybody's face that I fought. Am I willing to [rematch him]? I just beat the s*** out of him, of course I would. That's not the way to [try and get a rematch]."
While Gaethje had previously ruled out a rematch after their fight, this exchange seems to have closed that door, leaving Topuria searching for a new opponent in the UFC lightweight division.
