IFFHS Names Lionel Messi Best Player of 2026 World Cup Despite Silver Ball Award
Even though Lionel Messi received the Silver Ball from FIFA after Argentina lost to Spain in the 2026 World Cup final, another organization saw things differently. The International Federation of Football History and Statistics (IFFHS) selected Messi as the tournament's best player.
The IFFHS based its decision on a performance index that evaluates match ratings, goals, assists, and overall influence, especially during knockout matches. At 39 years old, Messi played all eight games in the competition, scoring 8 goals and providing 4 assists, totaling 12 goal contributions.
This recognition came just days after FIFA awarded the official Golden Ball to Spain captain Rodri, leaving Messi with the Silver Ball and France’s Kylian Mbappé earning the Bronze. The difference between the awards lies in their criteria: FIFA's honors depend on voting, while the IFFHS relies on detailed statistical analysis of individual performances throughout the event.
