Ifeanyi Ndukwe Leaves Liverpool on Loan Before Debut
Liverpool’s surprise pre-season ever‑present is on the move before he’s even had the chance to debut.
Ifeanyi Ndukwe, the 18-year-old centre-back who has quietly started all four of Liverpool’s summer friendlies, will leave the club on loan from next week, according to Fabrizio Romano. The plan is already mapped out. The destination is close.
From Austria Wien to Anfield – and straight back out
Liverpool tied up a deal for Ndukwe back in January, agreeing his move from Austria Wien with a view to him officially joining this summer. Since reporting in, the Austria U21 international has been pushed straight into senior pre-season action, a clear indication of how highly the club’s staff rate his potential.
Four games, four starts. For a teenager fresh out of the Austrian Bundesliga system, that is not a token gesture. It is trust.
Yet he will not be seen in the Premier League this season. Not because of form, not because of fitness, but because of paperwork. Ndukwe does not currently have the points required on his work permit to feature for Liverpool’s first team in competitive fixtures, forcing the club to fast‑track a loan move.
Liverpool choose the hard road for a talent they like
Romano reports that Liverpool have already received offers from Portugal and are now weighing up which proposal gives Ndukwe the best platform in 2024–25. The club want minutes at a serious level, not just a badge on a CV.
They could have kept him in-house. He would have walked into the academy sides, trained at Kirkby, and waited. Instead, Liverpool are prepared to send him out at 18, into the cut and thrust of senior football, to accelerate both his development and his eligibility for a future work permit.
For a player who has yet to kick a competitive ball for the club, that is a strong statement of belief.
Defensive gaps and a looming decision
All of this unfolds against a more uncomfortable backdrop for Liverpool’s first team.
Joe Gomez has picked up an injury that will rule him out of the opening Premier League fixture. Ibrahima Konaté has already departed for Real Madrid in the summer window. The depth chart at centre-back, once a quiet strength, now looks exposed.
The club have moved to refresh the position with youth: Giovanni Leoni has arrived but is still recovering from injury, while Jeremy Jacquet is yet to taste Premier League football. Both are long-term projects, not instant solutions.
So as Ndukwe prepares to leave on loan and Leoni works back to fitness, the picture is clear. Liverpool may need another centre-back – one with experience, one ready to walk straight in alongside Virgil van Dijk – if they are to navigate the new season without gambling on availability and raw potential.
The next defender through the door could define how bold Liverpool can be when the serious games start.
