Hervé Koffi Joins Union Saint-Gilloise on Loan from Lens

Hervé Koffi’s resurgence in France is about to earn him a Champions League stage – just not with the club that owns him.

According to La DH, the RC Lens goalkeeper is set to join Union Saint-Gilloise on loan with an option to buy, a move that underlines both his rising stock and the ruthless depth chart at Lens.

Only a few weeks ago, Koffi returned from SCO Angers with his reputation transformed. The Burkinabé international put together a standout season, establishing himself as one of Ligue 1’s most impressive goalkeepers. Commanding in his area, sharp off his line, and consistent across the campaign, he looked every inch a No. 1 ready to anchor a project.

Back in the north of France, though, the door has not opened. It has closed.

At Lens, competition from 21-year-old Robin Risser has effectively blocked Koffi’s path. For a 29-year-old entering what should be his prime years, another season as a back-up is not an option. The club’s stance has been clear enough: there is value in Koffi, but not necessarily a starting role.

So the solution lies across the border.

A return to Belgium brings Koffi back to familiar territory. He knows the league, the grounds, the tempo. He first arrived there with Royal Excel Mouscron in 2020-21, then built a solid reputation over three seasons at Royal Charleroi SC from 2021 to 2024. Those years hardened him, turned raw potential into a reliable last line of defence.

Union Saint-Gilloise are betting that version of Koffi – the mature, battle-tested goalkeeper – can carry them into a new era.

This is not a gentle landing. In Brussels, he will be walking straight into the pressure cooker of Champions League football. The task is clear and daunting: replace Kjell Scherpen, who departed this summer for newly promoted Premier League side Ipswich Town.

Scherpen’s exit left a sizeable void for a club that has grown used to punching above its weight, both domestically and in Europe. Union need a keeper who can handle high lines, high stakes and high expectations. Koffi, with his Angers season as proof of concept, fits the profile.

The structure of the deal – a loan with an option to buy – suits everyone. Lens retain a degree of control and potential resale value. Union gain an immediate starter with European experience and the possibility of making the move permanent if he delivers. Koffi gets what he has earned: a starting shirt and a bigger stage.
