Héctor Bellerín Leads Real Betis to 3-1 Victory Over Arsenal

Héctor Bellerín walked out into the Dublin evening with an armband on his sleeve and a decade of memories on his shoulders – and then calmly led Real Betis to a statement 3-1 win over Arsenal.

This was supposed to be a gentle pre-season reunion. It became something sharper than that.

Captain for a night, captain by choice

The 31-year-old did not just happen to wear the armband. He went and asked for it.

Bellerín, who grew from academy prospect to club captain in North London, revealed he had spoken to Marc Bartra days before the game, requesting the captaincy for this one occasion. Bartra stepped aside.

“I spoke to Marc during the week and asked him to let me do it, he’s a great teammate,” Bellerín said, as quoted by Mundo Deportivo. He wanted the responsibility, the symbolism, the chance to walk out against the club that shaped him.

It showed. This was not a testimonial stroll. It was a player fully engaged, driving a side that treated Arsenal not as sentimental old friends, but as Premier League champions there to be beaten.

Betis cut through the nostalgia

While the emotional storyline naturally wrapped itself around Bellerín, Betis as a whole played with the sharp edge of a team already tuned for competition.

They were disciplined without the ball, aggressive with it, and ruthless when chances appeared. Arsenal fielded plenty of familiar first-team names in the opening 45 minutes, yet it was the Spanish side who looked more cohesive, more certain of their patterns.

Bellerín loved it.

“It was lovely to enjoy this kind of entertaining match, where possession and control were shared and both sides had chances,” he said. “The team played a great game. I really liked the solidarity and communication shown by everyone.”

“Especially in defense during the first half when they posed challenges for us,” Bellerín added. “We handled those situations well and were clinical in front of goal. It was all very positive.”

Bellerín did not pretend this was Arsenal at full tilt. Several key figures are still to return, and he acknowledged it.

“It’s true that Arsenal is still waiting for some players to arrive and doesn't have its full squad yet, but it is a very well-drilled team,” he said. He pointed to the alignment between the first team and the club’s youth setup, a structure he knows better than most.

That familiarity made the win feel even more significant. Arsenal’s patterns were recognisable; Betis still managed to disrupt them.

“It wasn't going to be easy. They fielded many starters in the first half, and we stood our ground,” Bellerín said.

The scoreline will be logged as a pre-season footnote, but inside the Betis camp it lands as something heavier: evidence that their work is bedding in.

“I’m happy with how the preseason is going – beyond just the results – looking at how we’re playing, keeping possession, being clinical, showing defensive solidarity and teamwork, and displaying a desire to have the ball and confidence when in possession,” he explained. “If we keep doing that, we’ll be in good shape.”

A reunion that points forward

For Arsenal fans, seeing Bellerín with a different badge but the same familiar stride will have stirred a mix of nostalgia and pride. He remains a beloved figure in North London, and his words about “so many teammates and Mikel [Arteta]” carried genuine warmth.

For Betis, this was not a sentimental exercise. It was a dress rehearsal for a Liga season in which they intend to compete, not just participate.
