Hammarby vs Kalmar: A Fragile Clash at 3Arena
Hammarby’s season has reached the tightrope stage. The Stockholm club sit second after 12 Allsvenskan matchweeks, clinging to a Conference League qualifying place and staring at a table that flatters and warns in equal measure.
On Sunday at 3Arena, Kalmar come to town. On paper, it is a meeting between a side chasing Europe and another trying to stay clear of the drop. On the pitch, it looks far more delicate than that.
Hammarby still leaking, still dangerous
The 2-1 win over Elfsborg on July 5 was more than three points for Bajen. It stopped a slide. Before that, three straight league defeats, seven goals conceded, three scored. A team that had been purring suddenly looked brittle.
Henrik Rydström’s men have now let in nine goals in their last five league games, shipping at least two in three of those outings. They have scored nine in the same spell, which tells the story: Hammarby are open, adventurous, and far from watertight.
The table reflects the tension. Second place, 20 points, but only two clear of Elfsborg in fourth. And above them? Sirius, already nine points ahead after 11 gameweeks. Talk of a first league title since 2001 feels fanciful for now; this is about hanging on to Europe, not chasing down top spot.
At 3Arena, though, they usually find their edge. A 2-1 loss to AIK on May 24 snapped a strong home run, but before that Hammarby had taken four wins and a draw from five league matches in front of their own supporters. The stadium has been a shelter from their inconsistencies elsewhere.
Rydström has decisions to make. Hampus Skoglund’s injury last time out opens the door again for Ibrahima Fofana at full-back. Inside him, Victor Eriksson and Frederik Winther are expected to form the central pairing, with Markus Karlsson and Tesfaldet Tekie offering legs and control in midfield.
Up front, the equation is simple. If Nahir Besara finds space between the lines and time on the ball, Paulos Abraham usually profits. Abraham sits on six league goals and will fancy a seventh here, but his service line is everything. Cut Besara off, and Hammarby lose much of their bite.

Kalmar’s away-day problem
Kalmar arrive with their own contradictions. They brushed aside Orgryte 3-0 on July 5, a performance defined by a ruthless first half in which they allowed just five opposition touches in their box before the break. It was controlled, clinical, the kind of display that can reset a season.
Those three points could prove huge. Toni Koskela’s side sit 12th on 13 points, only two ahead of IFK Göteborg in 14th, the relegation playoff position. One bad week and they are in real trouble.
The recent head-to-head record offers little comfort. Kalmar are winless in their last six meetings with Hammarby and have lost the last three. Another defeat on Sunday would make it four in a row against Bajen, a psychological hurdle as much as a statistical one.
There is one bright note: form over the last five league games. Roda Broder rank fourth in the Allsvenskan for points taken in that stretch, with nine from a possible 15. Three wins, two defeats. Momentum, of sorts.
Then comes the catch. Kalmar simply do not travel well. Five straight away losses in the league, 11 goals conceded, only four scored. Every trip has felt like a step backwards.
Koskela must again work around the absence of centre-forward Malcolm Stolt, not due back until later this month. Anthony Olusanya and Abdussalam Magashy are the likely attacking pair, tasked with stretching a Hammarby back line that has looked vulnerable when turned and pressed.
In midfield, Robert Gojani and Carl Gustafsson should keep their places, the engine room that has to both shield and supply. At the back, Zakarias Ravik and Melker Hallberg are expected to anchor the defence, hoping to bring some order to those chaotic away numbers.

Tight margins, open game
All signs point to a match that could swing wildly. Hammarby have only just snapped a worrying losing run and do not look like a side guaranteed to close out games. Kalmar, for all their recent uptick in results, have been poor away from home.
The hosts will back their attacking patterns and home form. The visitors will lean on renewed confidence and the urgency of a team glancing over its shoulder at the relegation playoff line.
With both sides scoring and conceding freely in recent weeks, control may be a luxury. The pressure on Hammarby to keep their grip on a European spot, and on Kalmar to keep daylight between themselves and the bottom three, suggests a game played on the edge.

If that proves accurate, the noise at 3Arena on Sunday will not be about a title charge or a crisis, but something more familiar in this league: two teams discovering, again, that in the Allsvenskan, nothing comes easy.
