Hamburg Sign Bilal Nadir on Free Transfer from Marseille
Hamburg have moved again in the summer market, prising Moroccan midfielder Bilal Nadir from Olympique Marseille on a free transfer and handing him the number 4 shirt as a statement of trust and responsibility.
The 20-year-old becomes the club’s second signing of the window, arriving hot on the heels of forward Patson Daka. Where Daka brings goals and vertical threat, Nadir is designed to give Hamburg’s midfield a new rhythm.
The German club announced the deal on their official X account, confirming that the Morocco international joins on a long-term contract after leaving Marseille at the end of his deal.
The move was wrapped up at Hamburg’s training camp in Austria. Nadir passed his medical, then signed his contract in front of club officials, immediately stepping into the group rather than being unveiled from afar. For a young player changing leagues and cultures, that detail matters: he starts his German adventure in the thick of pre-season work, not on the periphery.
Nadir’s first words as a Hamburg player were brief but pointed. “I am very happy to become a Hamburg player, and I can't wait to meet the club's fans and play for this city,” he said, underlining both the scale of the club and the pull of the project.

“Bilal is a versatile player who can fill several roles in midfield. His arrival gives us greater flexibility, and he also has a calm personality and fits in with our style of play and our values,” she explained, framing him as both a footballing asset and a cultural fit in the dressing room.
Sporting director Claus Costa echoed that enthusiasm, stressing the technical and artistic quality of the left-footer, who stands at 1.86 metres. Hamburg are not just adding legs in midfield; they are betting on a tall, elegant operator who can shape games with the ball at his feet.
Nadir’s path to this point has been steady rather than explosive. Born in Nice on 28 November 2003, he came through the academy at his hometown club before Marseille moved for him in the summer of 2021. The step up to the Vélodrome brought expectation, and he eventually broke into the first team in 2023.
Once in, he stayed in. Nadir made 53 official appearances for Marseille, scoring two goals and providing five assists. Those numbers hint at a player who can link play and create, not just recycle possession. He also tasted European competition early: four outings in the Champions League and two in the Europa League have already given him a glimpse of the game at its sharpest edge.
That exposure has not gone unnoticed at international level. Morocco called him into the senior squad in March 2025, a clear sign of how he is viewed within the national setup, even if he is still waiting for his full debut. Before that, he had already represented Morocco’s under-23 side and several French youth national teams, a dual-track development that reflects both his birthplace and his roots.
