Gianni Infantino Faces Growing Opposition as First Nation Withdraws Support for FIFA Re-Election

Gianni Infantino, who has led FIFA since February 2016, is preparing to run for re-election as president next year. However, his future now appears uncertain after a European country became the first to withdraw its support for his candidacy.

Controversy Over FIFA Forward Enterprise Sparks Backlash

Infantino’s standing took a hit following FIFA’s decision to scrap plans involving third-party minority investments in a new subsidiary called FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE). This entity was intended to manage commercial rights for upcoming tournaments but met fierce resistance from several football associations worldwide.

The backlash culminated in UEFA and the English Football Association publicly opposing the proposal, leading all 55 European member associations to support a boycott of FIFA competitions, including both men's and women's World Cups.

Infantino Responds to Criticism

“The FIFA Forward Enterprise project was intended to provide a basis for further strengthening our FIFA Member Associations and our sport worldwide, especially in those countries where support is most needed,” Infantino explained.

“After listening carefully to all views, it became clear that the project created divisions not in line with our original goal. Our purpose has always been to unite and improve.”

Following this, Infantino announced the proposal would not move forward and expressed his intent to rebuild consensus among stakeholders to continue growing football globally, particularly in countries needing support.

Wales Pulls Support, Citing Governance Concerns

On August 3, Wales became the first nation to publicly announce its withdrawal of support for Infantino’s 2027-2031 FIFA presidency bid. The Football Association of Wales (FAW) criticized recent governance failures, leadership issues, poor communication, and lack of sound judgment under Infantino's tenure.

“Failing to put the best interests of football first is a failure we cannot accept,” the FAW stated. They also reportedly sent an official letter to FIFA outlining their position.

Other Associations Demand Leadership Review

UEFA declared it had lost confidence in FIFA’s current leadership. Similarly, football associations from the Netherlands, Germany, and Norway voiced calls for change:

• Dutch FA (KNVB): Expressed a fundamental breach of trust and no longer has confidence in Infantino’s leadership despite the proposal’s withdrawal.
• Norway FA: Praised the withdrawal but emphasized the need to transform FIFA's internal culture toward openness rather than fear and politics.
• German FA President Bernd Neuendorf: Accused Infantino of acting unilaterally and irresponsibly, harming the best interests of football.

Upcoming Election Details

The election for FIFA president will be held during the 77th FIFA Congress on March 18 in Rabat, Morocco. All 211 member associations hold one vote each, making the process highly competitive amid these growing tensions.
