Gary Neville Backs Arsenal to Win Premier League Again Due to Defensive Strength
Gary Neville has confidently predicted that Arsenal will reclaim the Premier League title, highlighting their defensive strength as the key factor setting them apart from rivals like Manchester United, Chelsea, and Liverpool. Despite recent wins for his former club Manchester United and a Chelsea resurgence, Neville believes Mikel Arteta has crafted a defensive lineup unmatched by any other team in the league.
Neville Highlights Arsenal’s Defensive Edge
Backing Arsenal to win the title again, Neville pointed out how their defense is far superior compared to their competitors. While United and Chelsea had successful weekends, he feels Arteta’s focus on building a strong backline has created a gap others can’t close. For example, Chelsea nearly lost a three-goal lead under manager Xabi Alonso, and United heavily depended on Bruno Fernandes in their 5-2 win.

Neville praised Arsenal’s defensive signings at the Emirates, impressed by the depth of quality players they’ve gathered in defense.

He said, "It’s incredible what Arsenal have done really, to sign Ezri Konsa... They’ve already got eight amazing defenders and now another good centre-half." Neville sees this as Arsenal doubling down on defense to avoid conceding goals and to be miles ahead defensively, which he thinks will help them win the title again.
He added that if you compare Arsenal’s attacking players with those from United, Liverpool, or Chelsea, you might keep Arsenal’s forwards. Yet defensively or in midfield, Arsenal's squad stands above the rest.
Concerns Over Rivals’ Defensive Stability
Despite Chelsea beating Brighton, Neville expressed doubts about the defensive stability of Xabi Alonso’s team compared to Arsenal’s settled backline. He noted that while other clubs have talented individuals, they lack the cohesive defensive unit that Arteta has built.
"They had to bring in a new goalkeeper [Emiliano Martinez]. They’ve done that and brought in a big personality. But looking at the defenders who played against Brighton — Levi Colwill, Maxence Lacroix, and Wesley Fofana — I see very talented players but not a true defensive unit," Neville said.
He continued, "Arsenal’s back-four of Timber, Calafiori, Saliba, and Gabriel with goalkeeper David Raya behind them is a real defensive unit. The only other team with such a solid structure recently was Manchester City when they won the league. Teams like Liverpool had it before, but right now, there’s a lack of such cohesive defensive units."
Neville also raised concerns about Liverpool and Manchester United’s depth. Although Liverpool boasts a strong attack with players like Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz, Neville criticized their lack of full-back options for manager Andoni Iraola. Similarly, he questioned United’s depth after Leny Yoro had to cover wide areas instead of a specialist full-back.
