Turki Alalshikh Explains Fury vs Joshua Location and Claims Dua Lipa Declined Performance
The upcoming heavyweight bout between Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua will take place in Cardiff’s Principality Stadium, a decision that has sparked some unusual comments from boxing official Turki Alalshikh. He revealed why the fight was moved from London and mentioned pop star Dua Lipa in the process.
Dua Lipa and the Venue Decision
Alalshikh stated that London could not meet his requirements for the fight’s schedule, specifically pointing out that the stadium wouldn’t be available until 2 a.m. He also claimed that Dua Lipa refused to perform at the event because she does not like boxing or perhaps even him personally.
“I will be honest today, I know that London wouldn't give me the stadium until 2am, and I know that Dua Lipa will not perform in the stadium, because she doesn't like boxing, and maybe she doesn't like me,” said Alalshikh.
No response has come from Dua Lipa or her team regarding these remarks.
Financial and Logistical Reasons for Cardiff
Alalshikh also explained that hosting the fight in the UK could lead to financial losses near $70 million (£52.8m). Holding it in Wales allowed a better time zone and avoided losing money. Cardiff's Principality Stadium provided the needed timing flexibility that London couldn't offer.
“Nobody questioned me about UK. I love the British people, I try to deliver everything for them. Put yourself in my shoes; there's a situation to lose $70million (£52.8m); the best is to have it in a good time zone,” he said.
He further noted the local pride in Wales, referencing football legend Ryan Giggs, as part of the appeal to stage the fight there.
British Boxing Community Welcomes the Fight
Anthony Joshua’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, praised the UK boxing fans and community for pushing to keep the fight on British soil. He expressed excitement for what he expects to be a historic night for boxing.
“I'm excited. Turki, I know we've fallen out, but I promise you this'll be the greatest night you've ever had in boxing.”
“When we talked about this fight, you envisaged it for British boxing. This guy (Joshua) has changed boxing in this country. So has Tyson Fury. We are the envy of the boxing world.”
Hearn thanked the British public for their role in ensuring the fight remained in the UK, admitting previous attempts to host it elsewhere failed.
Fury vs Joshua: Focus Shifts to the Fight
With Cardiff now confirmed as the venue, both fighters can focus fully on preparing for what promises to be a significant event in their careers. Meanwhile, Dua Lipa remains an unexpected figure in the pre-fight story.
