Franco Mastantuono Joins Fiorentina on Loan from Real Madrid
Franco Mastantuono has swapped the Bernabéu for Florence, joining Fiorentina on a season-long loan from Real Madrid, the clubs confirmed on Friday.
The move gives one of Argentina’s brightest young talents a fresh stage and a little breathing room. At 18, Mastantuono arrives in Serie A carrying both the weight of expectation and the scars of a demanding first year in Europe.
From River phenomenon to Madrid reality
Mastantuono’s rise has been rapid and ruthless. He exploded onto the scene at River Plate, making his senior debut at just 16 and, within months, forcing his way into the Argentina national team. In June 2025, he became the youngest player ever to represent his country, a marker that instantly pushed him into the global spotlight.
Europe’s elite circled. Real Madrid won the race, beating Paris Saint-Germain to his signature and tying him down on a six-year deal after prising him from River. It felt like the start of a long, inevitable ascent.
The reality was harsher.
A demanding year at the Bernabéu
Thrown into one of the most unforgiving squads in world football, Mastantuono found minutes, but not momentum. He featured 35 times across LaLiga, the Champions League, the Copa del Rey and the Spanish Supercopa, scoring three goals. The numbers look respectable for a teenager on paper; the performances never quite caught fire.
He played more in the early months, when the novelty and surprise factor worked in his favour. As the season wore on and Madrid’s campaign tightened, his influence faded. The stakes rose, the rotation shrank, and the winger slipped down the pecking order.

Now comes Fiorentina, and with it a different kind of pressure. Less glare, more responsibility.
"It's a special day for me," Mastantuono said on Friday. "I was excited about joining the club... It's a team with a lot of history."
The move runs until June 30, 2027, giving the winger a long runway to grow away from the constant scrutiny of Madrid. Fiorentina, with their tradition of nurturing attacking talent and leaning into technical football, offer a more forgiving environment, but not a soft one. Serie A still tests decision-making, discipline and tactical intelligence every week.
