Francesco Totti Claims Italy’s 2006 World Cup Victory Relied on Him

Francesco Totti, the legendary Roma playmaker, recently joked that Italy’s success at the 2006 World Cup would not have happened without his key contributions. He topped the tournament with four assists and played a major role despite battling a serious injury.

Totti Reflects on His Career and 2006 Glory

Totti is celebrated in Rome for his loyalty to Roma, but he believes winning the 2006 World Cup boosted his reputation beyond Italy. Speaking to Corriere dello Sport on his 50th birthday, he explained that lifting the trophy in Germany turned him from a Roman legend into an international football icon.

A Bold Statement About the Final

The former forward insisted his presence was crucial to coach Marcello Lippi’s squad success. He humorously remarked, “If I hadn’t played, they wouldn’t have won it.” He added that the World Cup victory gave him recognition outside Rome. Even though he played at only 40 percent fitness, Totti believed he made a big impact. Not everyone gets to win a World Cup, he noted.

Playing Through a Serious Injury

Totti’s claim about being at 40 percent is accurate. He suffered a fractured left ankle in February 2006, underwent emergency surgery, and rushed to recover in time for the summer tournament. Despite limited sharpness, he started six out of seven games, scored once, and led the competition in assists.

  • Injury: Left ankle fracture in February 2006
  • Games Started: 6 of 7 matches in the World Cup
  • Goals: 1 goal
  • Assists: 4 assists, most in the tournament

He also recalled his peak years between 2001 and 2008, saying, “I was ‘embarrassing’ for how strong I felt.”

Leading by Example Rather Than Words

Despite his talents, Totti was often criticized for not being vocal in the dressing room. When asked about this, he admitted he focused on performing on the pitch instead. “Outside it, everyone talks,” he said. “They asked why I didn’t speak to the team before games, but I needed to play football and enjoy myself. I never felt tension before a match.”
