Fiorentina Rejects Free-Agent Jadon Sancho in Rebuild

Jadon Sancho’s long-rumoured path to Serie A has hit another dead end.

A year on from a drawn-out saga with Roma that never got over the line, the winger has once again been offered to Italy. This time, the answer was swift and cold. Fiorentina said no.

Sancho, now a free agent after Manchester United opted against extending his contract and following a loan spell at Aston Villa, was put on the table for La Viola two weeks ago. His entourage made contact, sounding out whether the club would be tempted by a high-profile name available without a transfer fee.

They weren’t.

Despite the lack of a fee and Sancho’s obvious talent, Fiorentina rejected the chance to sign him. The decision, reported by Alfredo Pedullà, cuts through the noise around the former Borussia Dortmund star and underlines just how far his stock has fallen in recent seasons.

The reasons in Florence are clear. Sancho’s recent track record counts heavily against him. Form, availability, and the baggage of his time at Manchester United have all left clubs wary. Fiorentina, in particular, have little interest in inheriting someone else’s problems at a moment when they are trying to reset their project.

They had another plan in mind anyway. Instead of gambling on a reclamation project, they moved for Franco Mastantuono, a younger profile with a cleaner recent reputation and room to grow into the role they envision.

The call fits neatly with the new direction under Fabio Paratici. Tasked with overseeing a rebuild, the former Juventus and Tottenham figure is shaping a squad around age, upside, and reliability. He knows Sancho well from his time in England, has seen the highs and the turbulence up close, and still chose to walk away.

A few years ago, the idea of a club turning down Jadon Sancho on a free would have sounded absurd. Today, Fiorentina’s refusal barely raises an eyebrow.

For La Viola, it’s a statement of intent. For Sancho, it’s another reminder that the next move in his career won’t be handed to him on reputation alone.
