Finley Barbrook Joins Falkirk on Loan
Ipswich Town midfielder Finley Barbrook has joined Falkirk on a season-long loan, becoming John McGlynn’s 13th signing of a hectic summer – and the Falkirk manager insists he is not finished yet.
The 21-year-old arrives from the newly promoted Premier League side as the Bairns gear up for Sunday’s trip to Motherwell, drafted in to add height, bite and composure to the heart of McGlynn’s midfield.
Standing 6ft 2in, Barbrook offers a physical presence Falkirk have been actively hunting. He spent last season in English League Two with Colchester United, where he made 16 league appearances and scored once, gaining the kind of senior experience McGlynn views as essential rather than optional.
“Finley’s someone we’ve had on the radar for some time,” McGlynn said, underlining how long this move has been in the works. “Obviously I would have liked to have got him in a bit quicker but we’re delighted to have him.”
The Falkirk boss highlighted Barbrook’s versatility and balance in the middle of the park. He trusts the youngster to take the ball deep, link play with a range of passes and cover ground with real athleticism. For a squad already rebuilt in several areas, this is a very specific piece of the jigsaw.
“The size of him, that physicality is something that we’ve been trying to find without losing the quality,” McGlynn explained. “Sometimes when you go bigger, big guys can’t do some of the things that the tiny wee guys can do, and likewise, but he’s a well-balanced boy. We’ve been needing someone exactly like that.
“We’ve been patient waiting on him because he was the one that we wanted.”
Barbrook’s arrival continues a summer of aggressive recruitment, yet McGlynn made it clear that Falkirk’s transfer business is not closing down just because another target has walked through the door.
Pressed on whether more additions could follow, he did not hesitate.
“It could be as many as three, maybe three more if everything goes to plan and if we’re lucky enough to get it done,” he said. “It isn’t easy, but we have the scope to do it and we’re trying to do it.”
Thirteen signings in, and potentially three still to come. Falkirk’s squad is changing fast. The question now is whether this rebuilt group, with Barbrook anchoring the midfield, can turn that ambition into a season that truly sticks in the memory.
