Everton and Crystal Palace have finalized a swap involving wingers Dwight McNeil and Brennan Johnson. Both players are set for medicals before signing four-year contracts with their new clubs, marking a notable Premier League transfer ahead of the season.

The deal sends McNeil to Selhurst Park while Johnson moves to Goodison Park. This move revives a previous transfer attempt for McNeil, which fell through in February due to paperwork issues despite a £20m loan-to-buy agreement. McNeil's partner, Megan Sharpley, publicly expressed frustration over the aborted February move, highlighting the mental toll on players during transfer dramas. She stated:

"We live in a world where everyone is aware of how big a problem mental health is. So, in football, why do we find it acceptable because these young men are on a lot of money and that’s OK to mess and toy with their mental health and that it’s just part of the job? To have something promised to you, to have been dragged along on an emotional rollercoaster and to be toyed with until the final minute. For that to be torn away from you at the last second with absolutely no explanation has hurt more than I can say."

Brennan Johnson joined Palace in January from Tottenham Hotspur for £35m after scoring the winning goal in the 2025 Europa League final. Despite 26 appearances, he did not score for Palace. Meanwhile, Dwight McNeil has netted 15 goals in 128 appearances for Everton since his £20m move from Burnley in 2022.
