Estevao Opens Up on World Cup Pain After Surprise Return to Brazil Squad Under Ancelotti
Estevao, the Chelsea winger, shared his feelings about rejoining the Brazil squad for upcoming friendlies against Australia and India after recovering from a serious injury that kept him out of the 2026 World Cup.
Comeback Confirmed by Carlo Ancelotti
The 19-year-old attacker officially returned to the Brazilian setup during a press event in Brisbane, where he was named in Carlo Ancelotti's squad for the FIFA Super Date fixtures. The matches include two friendlies against Australia and one against India.
This marks Estevao's first call-up since tearing his right hamstring while playing for Chelsea in April 2026. Despite conservative treatment at his former club Palmeiras, the injury forced him to miss the World Cup.
Enduring Injury Heartbreak with Family and Faith
Speaking to the media, Estevao revealed how difficult it was to watch the World Cup from the sidelines. He credited his family and his faith for helping him stay mentally strong through the long recovery period.
“My family was fundamental to me during this injury period, which isn’t very easy for an athlete,” Estevao said. “We missed a very special moment, but they were always by my side. I also used a lot of the word resilience, facing each day, forgetting what happened and focusing on the future.”
Motivated by Ancelotti’s Selection
Before his injury, Estevao had a bright start internationally, scoring against Chile, South Korea, Senegal, and Tunisia. Now, as he aims to regain a starting spot alongside Rodrygo and Vinicius Junior, he dismisses any nervousness and instead feels honored.
“I don’t think it’s anxiety, I think it’s a privilege,” Estevao explained. “Every player who is chosen here is privileged. Being chosen by Ancelotti is a privilege for me. I see this as motivation to give my best every day in training and in games.”
Upcoming Fixtures and Goals
Brazil will begin their tour against Australia on Friday at Queensland Country Bank Stadium in Townsville. They will meet Australia again on September 29 at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane, before concluding with a match against India on October 3 at Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata.
Estevao hopes to cement himself as a key player in Brazil’s evolving lineup during these friendlies.
