England's World Cup Win Draws Record BBC Audience in 2026

The BBC recorded its largest live audience of 2026 during England's intense World Cup round of 32 match against DR Congo, with 16.3 million viewers tuning in. The match kept fans on edge as DR Congo scored early and resisted for over an hour, but England's captain Harry Kane secured two late goals, pushing the team into the round of 16.

Across the UK, the game averaged 14 million viewers, marking it as the year's most-watched moment on the BBC. Digital platforms also saw a surge: BBC iPlayer, the BBC Sport website, and app recorded 10.4 million streams combined. The live coverage page attracted more than 20 million views worldwide, 14 million of which came from the UK.

"These are extraordinary audience figures that show the BBC is the place the nation comes together for the biggest sporting moments," said BBC Director of Sport, Alex Kay-Jelski. "England's dramatic victory captured millions across TV, digital platforms, and social media, as audiences engaged with the tournament like never before."

Next Challenge Awaits at High Altitude

Following this win, England faces Mexico in the round of 16, with the match scheduled for 1am on Monday 6 July, broadcast live on BBC One and BBC iPlayer. Mexico has been undefeated in all four of their World Cup games so far and boasts a strong home record at the Azteca stadium in Mexico City, where they have lost only twice in 89 matches. The stadium’s altitude, 2,240 meters above sea level, poses a significant challenge, something coach Thomas Tuchel has acknowledged.

Still, with Kane leading the attack, England remains a serious contender. World Cup 2026 matches continue to air live on either BBC or ITV through to the final on Sunday 19 July.
