Manchester United's £43 Million Decision on Edmond Tapsoba

Manchester United face a £43million decision over Edmond Tapsoba, with Bayer Leverkusen making it clear they will only listen if a major offer lands on the table.

The Bundesliga champions do not want to lose their captain. They have him under contract until 2031 and see him as central to everything they do. But they have not slammed the door shut. A “suitable financial offer” changes the conversation – and that figure has been set at around £43m.

United in a three-way fight

United are not alone at the front of the queue. According to fussballdaten, Newcastle and Tottenham are also in close contact with Tapsoba’s camp, sounding out what it would take to get him out of Leverkusen.

For clubs that want to build from the back and defend on the front foot, he ticks boxes. The outlet describes the 27-year-old as “tailor-made” for a side that wants to play at high tempo and cover big spaces – exactly the kind of profile that tends to draw Premier League money.

Tapsoba’s numbers underline his importance. He made 29 Bundesliga appearances last season and chipped in with five goals, a significant return for a centre-back. The Burkina Faso international is a leader in Leverkusen’s dressing room and on the pitch, which is precisely why Newcastle reportedly view him as a ready-made organiser for their back line.

United’s shifting priorities

United’s interest is not new. They were linked with Tapsoba in 2024, but that summer they moved instead for Leny Yoro and Matthijs de Ligt to reinforce the heart of their defence.

This year the focus has shifted. Michael Carrick’s rebuild has so far centred on left-back and central midfield rather than another centre-half. Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos have already arrived at Old Trafford to strengthen the middle of the park, with room still left for another midfield addition if the right option emerges.

Out wide on the left, United have been pushing to upgrade as well. Lewis Hall has been a key target, but Newcastle have told them the defender is not for sale. A similar stance has come from Club Brugge over Joaquin Seys, shutting down another avenue as the window ticks on.

Carrick wants more

Carrick has been open about where he stands. He likes the business done so far, but he is not pretending the job is finished.

“We've improved the group,” he said. “We've improved the squad in different ways. Balance, quality and the direction we want to go in.

“So the players that we've brought in, I think we've done really good business and we've got some top, top, top players. So we're delighted with that. We always want to improve.

“We want more, we need more. We keep looking forward to how we can do that. So that never stops. We're conscious of that and we've got to keep pushing.”

The question now is whether “more” includes a £43m move for Tapsoba in a crowded market, or whether United stick to their current plan and leave the Leverkusen captain for their Premier League rivals to fight over.
