Egypt Demands FIFA Expel Referees After Argentina Defeat

The anger in Cairo has not cooled since the final whistle in Atlanta. It has hardened into a formal demand.

The Egyptian Football Association has asked Fifa to expel the entire refereeing team from the World Cup after the controversial last‑16 defeat by Argentina, accusing officials of “double standards” and “discrimination” in a blistering complaint.

VAR flashpoint ignites fury

Egypt led the world champions 1-0 in the second half and were threatening to pull off the shock of the tournament when the game turned on a VAR intervention.

Mostafa Zico thought he had doubled the lead, only for the video assistant referee to step in. French referee Francois Letexier eventually ruled the goal out, penalising Marwan Attia for stepping on Lisandro Martinez’s foot in the build-up.

For Egypt, that was the moment the night changed.

The EFA’s statement accused the officials and VAR team of “blatant errors” and of “insisting on not reviewing some of the footage”, arguing that the same level of scrutiny was not applied to incidents in Argentina’s favour.

The flashpoints did not end there. Deep into stoppage time, with the score 2-2, Mohamed Salah went down under pressure inside the Argentina penalty area. Egypt screamed for a spot-kick. Play went on. Seconds later, Argentina broke away and scored the winner in a 3-2 victory that sent the holders through and Egypt home.

Formal complaint and explosive language

The wording of Egypt’s complaint leaves little room for diplomacy.

“Hany Abou Rida, president of the Egyptian football federation, filed a complaint with Fifa, demanding an investigation into the French referee Francois Letexier after the serious refereeing mistakes committed by the team of referees and double standards, which caused the Egypt team to lose the match and leave the World Cup,” the statement said.

The federation says it has requested a full investigation into both the on-field officials and the video technology team, claiming “blatant errors” and alleging “the crime of discrimination against the Egyptian national team”.

It has gone further still, “demanding the exclusion of the referee and the entire crew from the World Cup after investigating these mistakes”.

Fifa has been contacted for comment.

Messi turns the game, Egypt see conspiracy

On the pitch, the story belonged to Lionel Messi. The Argentina captain, who may be playing in his final World Cup, dragged his side back from the brink. He set up Argentina’s first goal in the 79th minute, then struck the equaliser four minutes later to level the match at 2-2 before the late, crushing winner.

For Egypt, those details are almost secondary to the sense of injustice.

Manager Hossam Hassan did not temper his words after the defeat, saying Egypt had been “treated unfairly” and had “suffered injustice”.

“Perhaps they wanted to keep the world champion in the competition. Perhaps they wanted Messi to stay in the running,” he said, giving voice to a suspicion many Egyptian fans will share.

Zico, whose disallowed goal sits at the heart of the controversy, was even more direct.

“The referee was really unfair. The injustice was clear. There’s been an unfairness right from the start of the match,” he said. “It is clear that this tournament has been fixed.”

Historic chance lost

For Egypt, this was not just another knockout defeat. The country has never reached the quarter-finals of a World Cup. With a 1-0 lead over the reigning champions and the clock ticking down, history felt close enough to touch.

Instead, they leave with a grievance and a dossier.

Argentina move on to face Switzerland in Kansas City on Saturday (02:00 BST, Sunday), Messi still in the hunt, the holders still alive. Egypt go out demanding answers, and with one burning question hanging over the rest of this World Cup: how much faith can they place in the officials who decide its biggest nights?
