Anthony Gordon Aims for Goalscoring Greatness

Anthony Gordon is not content with being England’s energetic creator. He wants numbers. Goals. The kind that define tournaments and careers.

The winger has already played a central role in England’s march to the World Cup quarterfinals, where Norway await on Saturday. His two assists for Harry Kane in the late comeback against the Democratic Republic of Congo dragged England out of a hole, then he won the decisive penalty against Mexico that Kane buried. When the pressure rose, Gordon was right in the middle of it.

Yet he talks like a player who believes this is only a starting point.

“In terms of standards off the pitch, we are holding each other accountable, which is really important for any team that wants to be successful,” he says. The culture matters to him. So does the craft.

Gordon’s obsession is clear: he wants to become a finisher in his own right, not just the man supplying the final pass.

“I love finishing, it’s a big part of my game, I want to be a goalscorer,” the Liverpudlian says. “The only way I can truly get to where I want to be is by practising every single day. The more practice allows you to become free in the mind on game day.”

That daily grind has led him to the most ruthless striker English football has produced in a generation. When Gordon wants to talk about goals, he goes straight to the source.

“I have been speaking to H [Kane] and trying to gain as much knowledge as I possibly can because he can do it on both feet, doesn’t matter the angle, doesn’t matter off his touch, the ball finds a way into the net. I have been trying to pick up a little bit off him.”

It is a smart apprenticeship. Kane’s movement, timing and calm in front of goal have carried England to the latter stages of major tournaments before, and this campaign is no different. Now one of his most dynamic teammates is trying to add that same cold edge to a game built on speed and aggression.

England’s path from here is brutal: Erling Haaland and Norway next, with the looming prospect of Argentina, maybe Spain, maybe France further down the line. The margins will shrink. One chance might decide a night, or a nation’s mood.

If Gordon’s extra hours and Kane’s counsel sharpen his finishing just when the stakes soar, England’s attack may be about to gain a new, decisive weapon.
