Eduardo Camavinga Confirms Commitment to Real Madrid
Eduardo Camavinga has made his call. Manchester United can stop asking.
A reshuffle in Real Madrid’s midfield – and a dramatic twist in the Rodri saga – has pushed the Frenchman to shut the door on a move to Old Trafford and double down on his Bernabeu future, according to Fabrizio Romano.
United’s search meets a hard stop
United’s summer rebuild in the middle of the pitch is not finished. After bringing in Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans, the plan is clear: add a more defensive-minded midfielder to anchor the new-look engine room.
Recruitment staff have been working through a long list. Manu Kone, Sander Berge, Carlos Baleba, Tyler Adams – all have been noted. Arsenal’s Myles Lewis-Skelly has even been offered, with the London club ready to cash in on a player who can operate at left-back or at the base of midfield.
High on that list, though, sat Eduardo Camavinga.
At 23, he is already seasoned at the elite level, but his last campaign was brutal. Form deserted him, minutes dwindled, and the slump cost him a place in France’s World Cup squad. For some, that kind of season leaves a scar. For many inside the game, it was simply a stumble on a long road, not the sign of a player on the slide.
United sensed opportunity. They moved.
Romano reports that United called Camavinga’s agents in July. They wanted to be kept informed, to understand whether the door might open if Real Madrid’s plans squeezed him out. The interest was “confirmed and concrete”.
The response never changed.
Rodri chase collapses, Camavinga’s resolve hardens
Real Madrid had already started to redraw their midfield. Bernardo Silva arrived to add craft and control. The grand idea, though, was to pair him with the 2024 Ballon d’Or winner, Rodri, and build a new axis for the next era.
A move for the Manchester City midfielder was approved internally. The green light was there. But Real hesitated when it came to putting an official bid on the table. That pause proved fatal.
Barcelona stormed through the gap. They agreed personal terms with Rodri and accelerated talks with City. A fee in the region of €70m is anticipated. Rodri has now given total priority to Barcelona, and Real have abandoned their pursuit.
That decision changes the landscape for one man more than anyone else: Camavinga.
Rodri plays the same role, in the same zone, with the same responsibilities. Had the City midfielder walked through the doors at Valdebebas, Camavinga’s path to a starting role at the base of midfield would have narrowed sharply.
Instead, the road is open.
Romano explains that Camavinga’s message to every suitor – including United – has been consistent: he wants to stay at Real Madrid. No hedging, no flirting with the market. Stay, fight, convince.
“And now with Rodri NOT joining Real Madrid,” Romano added, Camavinga is “even more motivated to stay and continue trying to convince Jose Mourinho.”
The pressure that might have pushed him out has vanished. The competition he most needed to fear is heading to Camp Nou, not the Bernabeu.
United move on, Madrid look inward
For United, this is a line in the sand. The answer from Camavinga’s camp is definitive. There will be no late twist, no deadline-day drama. The Frenchman is off the table.
Attention must now swing fully to alternative options in that holding role, with the club intent on adding one more piece before calling their midfield overhaul complete. The profile is clear: a defensive shield to balance Santos and Tielemans and give structure to the side.
For Real Madrid, the situation is different but just as stark. The Rodri dream has gone. The solution is already in-house.
Camavinga, once seen as a potential casualty of a new era, now finds the club’s failed pursuit of another midfielder working entirely in his favour. The task in front of him is simple and brutal: prove he can be the long-term anchor Jose Mourinho can trust.
The market has spoken. Now it is up to Camavinga to do the same on the pitch.
