Christophe Dugarry Criticizes Kylian Mbappe's Ballon d'Or Ambitions as Childish
Former France international Christophe Dugarry has sharply criticized Kylian Mbappe, the star forward for Real Madrid, over his recent public statements about chasing the Ballon d'Or. The 1998 World Cup winner thinks Mbappe’s open desire for individual awards clashes with his role as a leader for both club and country.
Dugarry's Blunt Remarks on Mbappe
The relationship between past French football legends and today’s players has often been tense, but Dugarry did not hold back this time. After Mbappe expressed his ambition to win his first Ballon d’Or, Dugarry called out what he saw as a lack of humility and an excessive focus on personal achievements rather than team success.
The outspoken former striker believes that publicly campaigning for such an award is beneath someone of Mbappe’s standing.
"Childish and Pathetic," Says Dugarry
Dugarry took issue with Mbappe’s public declarations, especially since he captains the French national team, Les Bleus. In a fiery rant, Dugarry condemned Mbappe for openly aiming for the Ballon d’Or, describing the act of pushing for the prize as fundamentally flawed.
“To publicly ask for an individual award like that, I find it CHILDISH and PATHETIC. There’s nothing great about asking for it, especially as captain of your national team,” Dugarry said.
Mbappe Confident Despite Criticism
Mbappe recently admitted he feels well placed to finally claim the prestigious trophy. The 27-year-old mentioned that playing for Real Madrid, considered by many the best club in the world, naturally brings attention to him as a candidate for such honors.
“I think when you play for Real Madrid, the best club in the world, people associate you with this award,” Mbappe said. “Maybe it’s a good year for this but people can vote according to what they think.”
A Mixed Resume Despite Impressive Stats
Though Mbappe scored an impressive 42 goals in 44 games last season for Real Madrid, his failure to secure a Champions League title while at Paris Saint-Germain still draws criticism from some quarters. Dugarry argues that the focus on individual output rather than team success reflects a broader problem in modern football, where star players sometimes overshadow collective effort.
Dugarry added his thoughts on the shift away from team unity:
“Football is becoming more and more individualistic, and far too often it makes me sick. Instead of talking about yourself and individual awards, you should be talking about the team, about sharing success and about the trophies you didn’t win but wanted to win together.”
