Dan Burn Named Permanent Captain of Newcastle United: A Special Honor

Dan Burn has lived the Newcastle United dream for years. On Saturday, the club made it official: the boyhood fan is now the permanent captain of the team he grew up supporting.

The 32-year-old defender was confirmed as skipper by new head coach Matthias Jaissle, filling the vacancy left after Bruno Guimaraes’ summer departure. Burn, who joined in 2021 and has already racked up 193 appearances, didn’t hide what it meant.

“It’s an absolute honour to be named captain of Newcastle United,” he said. “It’s always an immense privilege to represent this football club, especially when I have been trusted with the armband on previous occasions, but to lead the team on a permanent basis is going to be really special.”

This is not a sudden rise. Burn has been at the heart of Newcastle’s resurgence over the past four-and-a-half years, a constant presence through European qualification, big nights under the lights and a shifting squad around him.

“It’s been an incredible journey since I joined the club four-and-a-half years ago – we’ve achieved some amazing things together and enjoyed some unforgettable moments,” he reflected. “I believe there’s still more to come and I’m relishing the responsibility of pushing everybody every single day to make sure that is the case.”

Jaissle, still in the early days of his tenure, has wasted no time in nailing down the dressing-room hierarchy, and he was unequivocal about why Burn was his choice.

“Dan is a natural leader and a perfect fit for the role of Newcastle United captain,” the German coach said. “He puts the interests of the team ahead of his own every time he steps onto the pitch and always gives maximum commitment in everything he does.”

The armband, though, is about more than what happens for 90 minutes.

“Off the pitch, he leads by example in how he conducts himself,” Jaissle added. “Not many people understand what this club means to the city better than Dan and that experience will be vital in helping guide our younger players through this period of change and adaptation.”

A local lad, a late-blooming Premier League defender, now the permanent captain of Newcastle United. Burn’s task is clear: turn that “really special” feeling into the standard for a new era on Tyneside.
