Derby County's Young Guns Triumph Over Mansfield in Pre-Season Clash
Derby County’s second string and academy hopefuls made a persuasive case for themselves with a sharp 3-1 win over Mansfield Town, turning a testing pre-season run-out into a showcase for the club’s next wave.
With the bulk of the senior squad earmarked for Burton Albion duty tomorrow, John Eustace handed the stage to fringe players and youngsters. They didn’t waste it.
Early breakthrough, swift response
Derby struck first. Lars-Jorgen Salvesen, operating with purpose on the flank, whipped in a quality cross and Dajaune Brown attacked it like a striker who knows these games matter. One touch, one finish, and Derby had the lead.
Mansfield, though, refused to play the supporting role. There was enough nous and quality in their ranks to trouble Derby, and they soon found a way back.
Released down the right, Michael Smith – once on Derby’s radar in the transfer market – showed exactly why. He chopped the ball onto his left foot, opened up the angle and curled a precise effort beyond the reach of Josh Vickers, who could only watch it arc past his outstretched hand.
That woke the game up. Vickers quickly had to justify his selection, producing a terrific save to deny the ever-dangerous David McGoldrick, who threatened to tilt the contest Mansfield’s way before half-time.
Woodwork, warnings and a shift in gear
The second half opened with a jolt. Smith, hunting a brace, rattled the crossbar from a corner, a reminder that Derby’s experimental side still had work to do defensively.
That scare seemed to sharpen Derby’s focus. From the centre of midfield, Owen Eames surged forward with real intent, slicing through the lines before slipping in Salvesen. The forward connected cleanly but fired straight at goalkeeper Lewis, a let-off for Mansfield and a missed chance that hinted this game still had a twist or two to come.
Chances began to flow at both ends. Vickers again had to be alert, flinging himself low to keep out a McGoldrick drive from distance as Mansfield pressed for a lead that never came.
Charlie Smith steps up, Allen finishes the job
The pressure broke the other way. Charlie Smith, quiet in the first period, suddenly found his moment. Picking up the ball around 20 yards out, he steadied himself and drilled a measured strike into the bottom corner. No fuss, no flourish. Just clean technique and conviction. Derby were back in front.
You could feel more goals in the game. Mansfield pushed, space opened, and Derby’s youngsters began to play with a touch more freedom.
The cushion arrived through Cruz Allen. Corey Blackett-Taylor did the hard work in the build-up, driving at the defence and unsettling Mansfield’s back line before feeding Allen. The finish was calm, guided past Harris with the assurance of a player far more seasoned than his years suggest.
From there, Derby controlled what they needed to control. The scoreline stayed at 3-1, and with it came a quietly significant pre-season statement: even with the senior names elsewhere, there is depth, energy and genuine competition bubbling underneath.
On this evidence, some of these youngsters won’t be content with just pre-season minutes for long.
