De Zerbi Confirms Spurs Still Active in Transfer Market
Roberto De Zerbi insists Tottenham are not done yet in the transfer market as the club edges towards an £85 million move for City winger Savinho.
Speaking before Spurs’ 2026-27 Premier League opener away at Brentford, the Italian cut an upbeat but guarded figure. The noise around north London is all about Savinho and a lavish summer outlay. De Zerbi refused to feed the frenzy with names – but he did nothing to cool it either.
“It’s not right to speak about the players until they are official,” he told reporters. “Just to say, I’m very happy. We have not finished yet in the transfer market.”
That last line will echo loudly around Hotspur Way. Spurs have already launched a major spending spree, and Savinho is expected to become the latest high-profile arrival, a statement signing at the sharp end of the pitch. De Zerbi, though, kept steering the conversation back to something less glamorous: character.
He has been thrilled with what has come through the door so far.
“It’s an important part, I think, because so far we have had a great summer of signings – great players, great behaviour, great spirit, great personality.”
The message was clear. Fees and fanfare are one thing. The dressing room is another.
While excitement builds over the looming £85m swoop, De Zerbi pushed back against the idea that Tottenham can buy their way up the table simply by collecting big names. He has watched this league long enough to know better.
“You know better than me in the Premier League, you don’t win the game with the names, with the big players,” he said. “There are a lot of examples in the last years in the Premier League.”
For De Zerbi, the real test starts when the whistle goes. Reputation will not save anyone if the fundamentals are missing.
“We have to deserve to win the game,” he continued. “And to deserve to win the game, we have to reach a high level in character, in passion, in value and in the style of play as well.”
Spurs may be chasing star power in the window, but their new head coach has nailed his colours to something tougher to measure: whether this rebuilt squad can show that edge, that hunger, when the season kicks off at Brentford.
