Darwin Núñez's Future: Saudi Exit or European Return?
Darwin Núñez’s Saudi detour looks set to last just one season.
The Uruguayan forward, one of last summer’s marquee arrivals in the Saudi Pro League, has grown restless at Al-Hilal and is now pushing for an exit despite being under contract until 2028. After a subdued 2026 FIFA World Cup and a brief holiday, he has reported back to pre-season with his future hanging in the balance.
The message from his camp is clear: he wants out.
A costly move that never caught fire
Al-Hilal spent around €55 million to bring Núñez in last summer, expecting him to become a central pillar of their attack. Instead, he has spent much of his time in the shadow of Karim Benzema, who has remained the first-choice striker.
For a player who thrives on rhythm and responsibility, the role never truly fit. The move has not delivered what either club or player envisioned, and Núñez now sees this window as his chance to reset his career.
Besiktas step to the front
The strongest option on the table right now comes from Turkey. According to transfer specialist Sacha Tavolieri, Núñez is close to an agreement with Besiktas, a move that would hand him what he craves most: minutes, and plenty of them.
The deal on the table is a loan until the end of the season. Al-Hilal, having made such a heavy initial investment, are not prepared to sanction a cut-price permanent sale, so a temporary move suits their stance for now.
Núñez would have to accept a lower salary than he could earn elsewhere, particularly compared to packages on offer in MLS. But the trade-off is clear. Besiktas can offer him a leading role in Europe, a platform to rebuild his reputation at a high-profile club desperate for a focal point in attack.
For a 27-year-old forward approaching what should be his prime, that carries weight.
MLS knocking, but Europe calls louder
The interest is not limited to Turkey. Atlanta United have already lodged an offer with Al-Hilal, looking to lure the former Liverpool striker to Major League Soccer.
MLS can match ambition with money and a central role, and for many players it has become an increasingly attractive destination. In Núñez’s case, though, the pull of Europe remains stronger.
For now, the Uruguayan’s preference is to return to the European game rather than head to the United States. With Besiktas pushing hard and offering guaranteed playing time, the Turkish route currently leads the race.
Barcelona watch from a distance
In the background, a heavyweight name hovers: FC Barcelona.
The Catalan club are in the market for a top striker this summer, with their primary target still Julian Alvarez of Atletico Madrid and Argentina. That pursuit, however, has hit a wall. Atletico have no intention of selling, turning negotiations into a dead end for the time being.
As a result, Deco and his recruitment team have begun scanning the market for alternatives. Núñez has been floated to Barcelona and is on the list as a potential option if other plans collapse.
So far, though, there has been no concrete movement from the Blaugrana. Interest exists, but not urgency. With finances tight and priorities elsewhere, a move for Núñez is considered unlikely at this stage.
A career at a crossroads
Núñez stands at a familiar modern crossroad for elite forwards: stay in Saudi Arabia on a lucrative contract and fight for relevance, or sacrifice part of that comfort to reclaim a starring role in Europe.
Besiktas offer him a stage. MLS offers him a project. Barcelona, for now, offer only a distant possibility.
The next decision will define whether his Saudi spell becomes a brief detour or the turning point that forced him to fight his way back to the centre of the European game.
