Cristiano Ronaldo Faces Possible Six-Month Ban After Leaving Portugal Squad

Cristiano Ronaldo May Be Suspended for Six Months After Leaving Portugal Team

Cristiano Ronaldo could face a suspension of up to six months after abruptly leaving the Portugal national team camp following a heated dispute with coach Jorge Jesus. The veteran striker exited the squad in Copenhagen after being benched during the match against Norway, putting himself at risk of disciplinary action under federation rules ahead of the game against Denmark.

Sudden Exit After Heated Confrontation

The football legend's unexpected departure occurred on Wednesday after tensions flared between him and Jesus. Following the incident, Ronaldo met with FPF president Pedro Proenca. According to the Portuguese Football Federation's disciplinary guidelines, any player who leaves or misses national team activities without a valid reason can face a suspension ranging from one to six months, along with a financial fine.

Federation's Disciplinary Code

The FPF code of conduct specifies penalties for unauthorized absences. ESPN reported that it states: "Any player who, having been duly called up, abandons or fails to attend training, a match, or any activity related to the national teams or representation of FPF or Portugal without justification, shall be sanctioned with a suspension of one to six months and, if a professional player, a fine between 500 and 1,000 euros."

Coach Jesus Stands Firm on Selection

The conflict arose after Jesus left Ronaldo on the bench against Norway, then reinforced his decision in a pre-match press conference in Copenhagen. He said, "I am the manager. I am the coach, and I told the player he was not going to play. I'll put him on the bench; if I need you for 30 minutes, you’ll play, and if not, you won’t. No player will ever change my mind. Not him, not anyone in football. Not any president either. Never, zero." This statement highlighted the coach's unwavering stance regardless of Ronaldo’s status.

Training Rift and Absence From Matchday Squad

The disagreement escalated on the training ground when Ronaldo skipped Wednesday's session at Parken Stadium shortly after the coach's comments. An official FPF update noted, "Parken Stadium training update: Joao Felix rejoined the group. Francisco Conceicao (ruled out for tomorrow) and Cristiano Ronaldo did not train." Having also missed Tuesday’s training in Sweden, Ronaldo was ultimately left out of Thursday's squad entirely.

Upcoming Challenges Without Ronaldo

Portugal faces a crucial double-header in the UEFA Nations League A, first taking on Denmark in Copenhagen on Thursday, followed by a home match against Norway on Sunday. These matches will test Jesus’s leadership as he manages the team without their all-time top scorer.

The FPF now confronts a difficult choice about whether to enforce the potential six-month ban on a player who has been central to Portugal’s success for years.
