Craig Gordon Retires: A Legacy in Scottish Football

Craig Gordon, the towering constant behind Scotland’s goal for two decades, has finally taken off the gloves.

The 43-year-old Hearts goalkeeper announced his retirement from football on Thursday, drawing the curtain on an international career that began in 2004 and spanned 84 caps, placing him fifth on Scotland’s all-time appearance list.

He delivered the news in a video message on social media, speaking directly to the supporters who have followed him from his early days to his final tournament. “It has been a privilege to represent you,” Gordon said. “I hope you have enjoyed it as much as I have. From the bottom of my heart, thank you.”

Those words closed a chapter that stretched across generations of Scotland teams and three major clubs: Heart of Midlothian, where he emerged and where he finished; Celtic, where he collected trophies and Champions League nights; and Sunderland, where he tested himself in the Premier League.

His last act on the international stage came in the glare of the World Cup, where he travelled as Scotland’s veteran presence and backup goalkeeper. Among more than 1,250 players selected for the tournament, he was the oldest. He did not play, watching from the bench as Angus Gunn started all three group games before sealing a move to San Jose Earthquakes in Major League Soccer last week.

Even in that supporting role, Gordon’s inclusion spoke volumes about his standing: a trusted voice in the dressing room, a safety net if called upon, a symbol of longevity in a brutal position.

The World Cup’s oldest player to actually step on the pitch was Cristiano Ronaldo, who turned 41 in February. Gordon, two years his senior, never got his farewell minutes on the field. His goodbye instead comes in his own words, on his own terms.

For Scotland fans, the image of Gordon — calm, rangy, unflustered under the cross — now moves from live broadcast to memory. The gloves are off. The legacy remains.
