Arsenal Pursue Jules Kounde to Strengthen Defense
Arsenal’s search for the final piece in Mikel Arteta’s defensive puzzle has led them back to Spain – and to one of La Liga’s most reliable operators.
According to a recent print edition of Sport (14 August, page 7), Arsenal are seriously interested in signing Barcelona defender Jules Kounde this summer, with the club exploring a move for the France international as they look to strengthen again after last season’s title push.
Arsenal Turn to Kounde
Kounde is not a speculative name on a long list. His body of work at Barcelona over the past campaign explains why Arsenal are circling.
The 27-year-old enjoyed a strong season in La Liga, delivering a consistent run of assured performances in a Barcelona side that often relied on his defensive discipline. He featured in 30 league matches, contributing one goal and three assists – numbers that underline not just his reliability at the back, but also his willingness to join attacks when the opportunity arises.
Right now, Kounde sits among the standout full-backs in Spain’s top flight. That status inevitably attracts attention, and Arsenal have joined the queue, sensing an opportunity to add a proven, top-level defender to a squad already built on structure and control.
There is a major obstacle, though. Kounde’s current deal at the Nou Camp runs until the summer of 2030. Barcelona are under no pressure to sell, and that length of contract makes any cut-price move almost impossible. If Arsenal want him, they will have to pay like a club that really means it.
What Kounde Brings to Arteta’s Arsenal
On the pitch, Kounde fits the profile Arteta has consistently targeted: aggressive, technically sound, and tactically versatile.
He is a sharp, proactive defender, strong in the tackle and quick to sense danger. Kounde reads the game well, stepping in to win possession rather than simply dropping off and reacting. When he does recover the ball, he doesn’t panic – he clears his lines when the situation demands it, but he can also pick a pass and start attacks from deep.
His attacking output, while not spectacular, is meaningful. One goal and three assists in league play last season show he can deliver the occasional decisive moment in the final third, whether through a late run, a cut-back, or a driven cross from the right.
Crucially for Arsenal, Kounde is not just a right-back. He can slot in as a centre-back, giving Arteta another flexible option in a back line that already morphs between shapes during games. That positional versatility is gold dust in a squad chasing domestic and European honours.
The question that lingers is a familiar one: how quickly could he adapt to the Premier League’s physicality and relentless tempo? La Liga offers technical tests; England adds a different kind of intensity. Any move would demand that Kounde adjust fast to a league where wide forwards and overlapping runners attack in waves.
A Defender Entering His Peak
Even with that caveat, the attraction is obvious. At 27, Kounde is stepping into what should be the prime years of his career. He is experienced enough to arrive as an immediate contender for a starting role, yet young enough to anchor a defence for several seasons.
If Arsenal do manage to prise him away from Barcelona, Kounde would not just pad out the squad. He would raise the level. He would deepen Arteta’s options, sharpen competition for places and strengthen a defensive unit already among the Premier League’s best.
And for a club intent on turning near-misses into major trophies, that kind of addition could be the difference between pushing hard and finally finishing the job.
