Coventry City Sign Goalkeeper Carl Rushworth for Record Fee

Coventry City have turned last season’s loan revelation into a statement signing, completing a permanent deal for goalkeeper Carl Rushworth from Brighton & Hove Albion in what is understood to be a club-record transfer.

The fee is reported to be around £22m, a staggering figure for a goalkeeper at a club that only ended a 25-year exile from the Premier League in May.

Neither side has confirmed the number, and Coventry have kept the exact length of Rushworth’s “long-term contract” under wraps. The intent is clear enough.

Rushworth, 25, was ever-present in Coventry’s Championship title-winning campaign, playing all 46 league matches and keeping 17 clean sheets. He did not just keep goal; he set the tone. Calm under pressure, aggressive off his line, and unflustered in possession, he became the quiet heartbeat of a side that refused to blink in the promotion race.

The bond between player and club was obvious long before the ink dried.

"I'm really happy, there's so many emotions that I've got," Rushworth said after the move was confirmed. "There's excitement, I can finally relax knowing it's done and that I'm back with the boys and at a club I loved being at."

For Rushworth, this is the end of a long and winding road. Signed by Brighton from hometown club Halifax Town in 2019, he never made a senior appearance for the Seagulls. Instead, his development was scattered across six different loan spells in seven years, a nomadic existence that sharpened his game but never offered a permanent home.

Coventry have now given him one, and paid heavily to do it.

Manager Frank Lampard, who trusted Rushworth as his No 1 throughout the promotion charge, made no secret of how pivotal the keeper had become.

"It's great to have Carl back with us on a permanent basis," Lampard said. "He's a top professional, a great character and he had a huge impact on the team to help us get promoted last season."

That impact will be tested in a very different arena next term. The Premier League asks harder questions of goalkeepers: crosses arrive quicker, shots are hit earlier, mistakes are punished with ruthless efficiency. Coventry’s hierarchy have effectively bet their record budget that Rushworth’s composure and presence will translate at the highest level.

From Brighton’s perspective, a player who never broke into the first team has now commanded a major fee. For Coventry, a loanee who helped drag them out of the Championship has become the face of their return to the elite.
