Chelsea's Cole Palmer Withdraws from England Squad Alongside Man Utd's Rashford and Mainoo Despite Tuchel's Warning
Chelsea playmaker Cole Palmer is expected to withdraw from the upcoming England squad, dealing a blow to manager Thomas Tuchel's plans. Despite Tuchel’s recent demand for Palmer to justify his selection after missing the World Cup, the 24-year-old looks set to prioritize managing his physical condition.
Reasons Behind Palmer's Withdrawal
Reports from The Athletic reveal that Palmer will sit out the international break for load management reasons. Although he played the full 90 minutes in Chelsea’s 3-0 defeat to Brentford, he will now skip the Nations League fixtures to protect himself from further strain.
Palmer isn't alone in this decision. Manchester United duo Marcus Rashford and Kobbie Mainoo are also likely to miss England duty. Rashford has been managing a persistent hip issue since the World Cup and was substituted late in United’s 1-1 draw with Fulham. Meanwhile, 21-year-old Mainoo, part of the World Cup squad but unused, is nursing an injury after playing 80 minutes at Craven Cottage.
Tuchel's Expectations and Alonso's Support
"It is one thing to be nominated, like with Cole, and getting your ticket back in the squad but it is another thing to perform for England," Tuchel said. "Cole needs to step up when he comes and he needs to show these kind of numbers to get his place, keep his shirt and justify the nomination."Tuchel acknowledged Palmer’s recent form, noting, "He has his numbers back, he has his assists back, he has decisive goals back. I think he has a point to prove, and the same goes for Trent [Alexander-Arnold]."
On the other hand, Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso supports Palmer’s cautious approach. "Sometimes you need to go through a difficult moment with an injury or whatever to learn from that," Alonso said. "Cole has gone through a difficult period with the injury, and now he’s working really hard to prevent those symptoms from coming back."
Injury Impact and Long-Term Strategy
Palmer’s hesitation stems from a challenging 2025-26 season plagued by thigh and hamstring problems. Although he made 34 appearances across all competitions, including 24 Premier League starts, and scored 11 goals with three assists, maintaining consistent fitness was an issue.
His improved performances under Alonso have been a highlight for Chelsea, but skipping England duty signals a focus on long-term health. With only two goals in 14 senior England caps, Palmer still has some way to go before securing a regular starting spot under Tuchel.
England Faces Tough Nations League Schedule Without Key Players
With Palmer, Rashford, and Mainoo absent, England faces a demanding series of four Nations League matches in three weeks. Tuchel’s depleted squad will host World Cup champions Spain at Wembley on September 26, then travel to Prague to face the Czech Republic on September 29, followed by a trip to Croatia on October 3.
The international window wraps up with a home game against the Czech Republic at Wembley on October 6. Tuchel now must rely on other players to navigate this intense schedule and secure positive results for the Three Lions.
