Christos Tzolis: Arsenal’s Preseason Standout
Christos Tzolis has walked into Arsenal’s preseason with the look of a man who doesn’t plan on waiting his turn.
Signed from Club Brugge for £34 million this summer, the 24-year-old winger has wasted no time making noise in a squad already brimming with attacking talent and now heavily linked with a blockbuster move for Real Madrid star Vinícius Júnior.
A statement preseason
Tzolis has been one of the standouts in Arsenal’s early work under Mikel Arteta. Around London Colney, staff have noted how he has driven several of the club’s demanding fitness tests, setting the tone rather than trying to keep up. On the pitch, he has already put a marker down, scoring in the 4-1 win over Girona on Saturday and offering a glimpse of the direct, aggressive play that persuaded Arsenal to move for him.
This is not a quiet bedding-in period. It’s an audition.
And it comes with a twist: Arsenal, the reigning Premier League champions, are actively exploring the possibility of adding Vinícius Jr. to Arteta’s forward line, with ESPN reporting that Real Madrid are open to his exit this summer.
For most new signings, that kind of rumour would cast a long shadow. Tzolis isn’t flinching.
“It’s up to me”
Speaking to reporters, the Greece international cut a composed, assured figure. He made it clear his focus is internal, not on the transfer market swirling around him.
“Obviously I'm confident as a player, so I don't think about the future and what the club will do in this position,” he said. “I'm thinking how to improve and settle as fast as possible in the club because I have the opportunity to train directly with the team from the beginning of the season, to play the friendly games and then to go to official games.
“It's a chance to play directly from the beginning and then it's up to me to show the qualities and what I can bring in the team. I'm pretty confident that I will show it in the next games.”
That is the battle line for Tzolis: not Vinícius, not anyone else, but the standard Arteta demands. If he hits it, he plays. If he doesn’t, someone else will.

Tzolis already knows what the Premier League feels like. He had a two-season spell at Norwich City, making his Premier League debut against Arsenal back in 2021. That version of him was raw, a prospect still learning the pace and physicality of English football.
Now he returns to the league at the other end of the spectrum: not fighting relegation, but trying to break into a title-winning side that expects to challenge on every front.
“It's a great opportunity to be a player of this kind of level team because it's one of the best in the world ... That makes me very happy to be here and more hungry as well to develop,” he said.
“I think I'm in the right club to develop and to get to the highest level. I'm really happy that I have this opportunity and I want to take it.”
The hunger is obvious. So is the timing. Arteta has been coy in public on links to Vinícius Jr., but has also made it clear he expects more movement at Arsenal before the window closes. Competition for places on the left will only intensify.
Tzolis doesn’t control any of that. What he can control is what he has already started to show: sharpness in training, end product in games, and a refusal to be intimidated by the scale of the club he has just joined.
Arsenal may yet land one of world football’s marquee wingers. If they do, the real question becomes whether Tzolis can turn this promising preseason into something more permanent — a role that forces Arteta to make room for him, no matter who else walks through the door.
