Chelsea Signs Marco Palestra in Major Defensive Investment

Chelsea are closing in on another major defensive investment, with Italy international Marco Palestra undergoing his medical in London ahead of a big-money move from Atalanta.

The 22-year-old right-back flew into the capital on Thursday, and his camp spent the evening ironing out the final details of a long-term contract. Barring late drama, he is expected to sign for Chelsea today.

Chelsea outmuscle Inter

Inter pushed hard for Palestra and thought they were in the race financially. Then Chelsea arrived.

The Premier League club effectively tore up the script by doubling Inter’s salary proposal, putting a net €5m per season on the table. The deal on offer runs for six years with an option for a seventh, a clear signal that Chelsea see Palestra as a cornerstone of their next cycle rather than a short-term fix.

For a player still at the start of his international career, it is a statement contract.

A fee that underlines Chelsea’s intent

The numbers underline just how highly rated Palestra has become in a short space of time.

Reports in Italy suggest Atalanta will receive €57m plus a further €3m in bonuses, while other sources in England have described the package only as “in excess of €50m.” The exact structure may be up for debate, but the scale is not: this is elite full-back money.

Atalanta have also secured a 10 per cent cut of any future sale, a smart insurance policy given Chelsea’s track record of selling on young assets at a premium. If Palestra develops as expected in the Premier League, the Bergamo club stand to profit again down the line.

From Pisa to the Premier League spotlight

Palestra’s rise has been rapid. The image of him driving down the flank for Cagliari at the Arena Garibaldi in Pisa in March 2026 already feels like a snapshot from another life. Now he is on the verge of stepping into the glare of Stamford Bridge, with a price tag and pay packet that bring instant scrutiny.

Chelsea, though, have made their calculation. They wanted a modern, aggressive right-back, and they were prepared to beat a Serie A giant to get him.

The medical is the final formality. The real examination starts when he pulls on that blue shirt.
