Ferran Torres is on the brink of joining Paris Saint-Germain in a deal that underlines just how carefully Barcelona now have to operate in the market – and how neatly they can still play the game when the numbers fall their way.
A €50m sale that dodges Man City costs
Barcelona and PSG have agreed a fee of around €50 million for Torres, with no add-ons attached, according to The Athletic. On the surface, it’s a straightforward big-club-to-big-club transfer. Underneath, the structure of the deal is doing a lot of heavy lifting for Barça.
When Barcelona signed Torres from Manchester City in January 2022, they paid €55m up front, with another €10m in potential variables. Hidden within that agreement were clauses that now define this summer’s move.
If Barcelona had extended Torres’ contract, they would have owed City an extra €8m. His current deal runs out next year. By selling him now, without renewing, that payment disappears.
There was more. City were also due a €10m sell-on fee if Barcelona sold Torres for €55m or more. The PSG agreement lands at €50m. That keeps the Catalan club just below the trigger point and allows them to retain the full fee.
For a club still walking a financial tightrope, avoiding up to €18m in additional commitments while banking €50m for a player in the final year of his contract is no small victory.
Selling a key man at his peak
The timing is ruthless. And yet, from Barcelona’s perspective, it is hard to argue with.
Torres has just come off the greatest summer of his career, scoring Spain’s extra-time winner against Argentina in the 2026 World Cup final. Before that, he played a major role in Barcelona’s title-winning campaign, hitting 21 goals in 49 appearances last season.
Across four-and-a-half seasons at Camp Nou, the 26-year-old has racked up 207 appearances, scoring 63 goals and supplying 23 assists. Those are not the numbers of a fringe player. They are the numbers of a forward who fought his way into the core of the side and stayed there.
And still, he is being cashed in on.
For Barcelona, the logic is cold but clear: a significant fee now, full control of the income, and no extra money flowing back to Manchester City. In the context of the club’s financial reality, it becomes less a sacrifice and more a calculated trade.
A reunion in Paris, a battle for minutes
For Torres, the move opens a new chapter and a familiar face.
At PSG he will reunite with Luis Enrique, the coach who trusted him with Spain and now looks ready to do the same in Paris. The relationship is already built; the expectations will be higher than ever.
He will walk into a dressing room stacked with attacking options and will have to fight hard to carve out a starting role. World Cup winner or not, nothing is guaranteed in that front line.
Barcelona, meanwhile, push ahead with €50m incoming and no extra cheques to City, easing the weight of a deal first struck at the Etihad.
They lose a World Cup match-winner and a title contributor in his prime. They gain financial breathing space and a cleaner path through the next phase of their rebuild.
