Chelsea’s Pre-Season Tour Takes Shape with Xabi Alonso

Chelsea’s pre-season tour is starting to look a lot more like Xabi Alonso’s team.

The manager is about to get a fresh injection of quality, headlined by the return of Mykhailo Mudryk, who has been cleared to play again and has already linked up with the squad.

Mudryk, 25, flew overnight into Hong Kong on Monday, touching down alongside the experienced Danny Welbeck as Chelsea step up preparations for their pre-season clash with Juventus. After a stop-start spell in blue, the Ukrainian’s availability offers Alonso the kind of direct, high-tempo threat his system feeds on.

He will not be alone in changing the dynamic of this tour.

Geovany Quenda, the £40m winger signed from Sporting, has also arrived and immediately adds intrigue on the flanks. Young, expensive, and aggressive in possession, he turns every training session into an audition. Behind him, new goalkeeper Mike Penders has joined the group, walking straight into a live battle for the number-one shirt with Robert Sanchez.

Alonso has not hidden it: that position is wide open. Every session counts. Every friendly counts.

The 2-1 defeat to Tottenham on Saturday underlined how much work remains, but it also sharpened the stakes for those still to feature. Moises Caicedo and Nicolas Jackson arrived late to camp and did not play against Spurs, but Alonso has made it clear they will be involved when Chelsea face Juventus.

That game now becomes more than a standard pre-season fixture. It is the first real glimpse of how this evolving side might look with Caicedo anchoring, Jackson stretching defences, and Mudryk and Quenda fighting for space in the wide channels.

The staff will assess the rest of the late arrivals before deciding on their roles in the subsequent matches against AC Milan and Johor Darul Ta'zim next weekend. By then, the picture around key positions – especially in goal and across the front line – should be sharper.
