Chelsea Ownership Talks: Boehly and Walter Considering Selling Stakes to Clearlake Capital
The ownership of Chelsea is set for a significant change, possibly the biggest since Roman Abramovich's era ended in 2022. Todd Boehly and Mark Walter are reportedly negotiating the sale of their shares to majority owner Clearlake Capital, which could bring an end to their partnership that has seen massive spending and frequent managerial changes at Stamford Bridge.
Clearlake Capital Moves Toward Full Control
According to the Financial Times, Boehly and Walter are exploring selling their stakes to Clearlake Capital, just over four years after the BlueCo consortium’s £2.5 billion acquisition of the club. This new deal might value Chelsea at more than £5 billion. Currently, Clearlake holds 61.5% of the club, while Boehly, Walter, and Swiss billionaire Hansjorg Wyss share the remaining 38.5% equally.
Financial Outlay Without Major Trophies
Since May 2022, the club has spent nearly £1.5 billion on transfers but has yet to secure either the Premier League or Champions League title. The period has been marked by inconsistency on the field and constant changes in management.
Internal Conflicts and Stadium Plans
Despite official denials of any discord between Clearlake co-founder Behdad Eghbali and Boehly, reports indicate ongoing talks for two years about a possible buyout amid tensions described as a "civil war." A major sticking point is disagreement over plans for a new stadium. Fans have also criticized the complex ownership model, expressing concerns about rising ticket prices and the multi-club strategy BlueCo follows.
Sporting Direction Under Xabi Alonso
During this uncertain boardroom climate, Xabi Alonso has taken charge of the first team. The summer transfer window saw Chelsea invest over £300 million on new players while recouping £143 million through sales. Alonso’s appointment signals a shift in approach after Liam Rosenior's brief spell as head coach.
Alonso stresses the need for experience alongside potential, leading to signings of seasoned Premier League players such as Jordan Henderson (36) and Danny Welbeck (35). This marks a clear departure from previous windows where the club focused heavily on young, unproven talent.
Clearlake’s Potential Total Control
If the sale goes ahead, Clearlake Capital, led by Behdad Eghbali and Jose E. Feliciano, would gain near-complete control over Chelsea. A governance clause means the chairman’s role would pass from Boehly to a Clearlake representative next May.
The hope among players and coaching staff is that any resolution will bring stability to a club that has lived under constant headlines. As Chelsea prepare for their Premier League opener against west London rivals Fulham, all eyes will be on whether Alonso’s restructured squad can translate this upheaval into results on the pitch.
