Chelsea Nears Loan Move for Teen Star Reggie Walsh to Wigan

Chelsea are closing in on a season-long loan move for highly rated teenager Reggie Walsh to Wigan Athletic, according to Ben Jacobs, in what looks set to be the next step of the club’s academy production line.

The 17-year-old, fresh from a standout pre-season, has forced his way into the shop window with a series of composed displays in Xabi Alonso’s sprawling summer squad. Walsh has already made four senior appearances for the Blues and was trusted from the start against Western Sydney Wanderers in Chelsea’s opening pre-season fixture, a clear sign of how highly the staff rate him.

That early faith appears to have done its job. Lower-league sides have circled in recent weeks, sensing an opportunity to secure a gifted midfielder who already looks comfortable in senior surroundings. Wigan have now moved to the front of the queue, with a deal described as close as the Latics look to sharpen their promotion push with Premier League talent.

Chelsea, though, are not about to let one of their brightest prospects leave without protection. In keeping with the club’s established strategy for academy players judged ready for the men’s game, Walsh is expected to sign a new long-term contract before heading out, safeguarding both his value and his pathway back to Stamford Bridge.

The timing is no accident. With the club’s extensive pre-season tour wrapped up and Alonso’s oversized travelling party back in the UK, Chelsea have entered the trimming phase. Senior players returning from post-World Cup breaks have rejoined the group, pushing youngsters who were making up the numbers towards decisive loan calls.
