Chelsea's Loan Options for Mudryk: Seeking a Fresh Start

Chelsea are working on a loan move for Mykhailo Mudryk, with the winger searching for regular football and full fitness after almost two years out of the game.

The 25-year-old has not played a competitive match since November 2024, his career abruptly halted by a four-year suspension following an adverse finding for the banned substance meldonium. That case has now been resolved through an agreement, clearing the way for his return and opening a door that had looked close to bolted.

Chelsea have eased him back in. Mudryk has featured off the bench in pre-season friendlies against Juventus, AC Milan and Johor Darul Ta'zim on the club’s tour of Asia, brief cameos designed less to impress than to reintroduce him to the rhythm and intensity of elite football.

The club and player then sat down at the end of that tour. The conclusion was blunt but logical: he needs minutes, and he will not get enough of them at Stamford Bridge right now. Mudryk agreed to leave on loan before the transfer deadline on 1 September.

Strasbourg have already been floated as a solution. The French club share the same BlueCo ownership as Chelsea, making any deal straightforward from a structural point of view and appealing for those who want control over his environment and development.

Mudryk, though, has his own ideas. He would rather stay in the Premier League and test himself again in England’s top flight. Chelsea are aware of that preference as they listen to interest from elsewhere, with several other clubs – including a number of leading sides in Italy – monitoring the situation and weighing up a move.

For Chelsea, this is about protecting an asset as much as it is about rehabilitation. Mudryk is tied to the club until 2031 after his high-profile arrival from Shakhtar Donetsk in 2023 for an initial £61m. Those numbers demand a proper attempt at recovery, not quiet acceptance of a stalled career.

The next loan will not just decide where he plays his football this season. It will shape whether Mudryk can still grow into the player Chelsea thought they were signing – or whether his story in west London starts to drift towards what-might-have-been.
