Carney Chukwuemeka's Injury Woes in Dortmund's Pre-Season Tour

Carney Chukwuemeka’s pre-season bid to climb the Borussia Dortmund pecking order suffered an early and worrying jolt in Japan, as the midfielder limped off with a right-knee problem in the friendly against Tokyo.

A bright start, then trouble

Barely eight minutes had been played when Chukwuemeka crumpled to the turf without any contact, his right foot appearing to catch in the grass. He tried to get up, then stopped, sat down and immediately signalled to the bench.

The medical staff rushed on and carried out a detailed examination of his right knee. For a moment it looked like his afternoon – and perhaps more – was over there and then.

Instead, after treatment on the sideline, the Austria international returned to the pitch and attempted to play through the pain. It was a brave call, and a calculated one, with the 22-year-old desperate to use this tour to force his way into a bigger role under the BVB coaching staff.

The gamble did not pay off.

A little over 20 minutes into the game, Chukwuemeka again went to ground, clearly still restricted in his movement. This time there was no debate. He was withdrawn and replaced by new midfield talent Takato Yamamoto, his body language betraying the frustration of a player who knew this was supposed to be his moment.

Uncertain diagnosis, bitter timing

How serious the injury is remains unclear. The club will only know more once a full diagnosis is made, and there is still the possibility that the change was made as a precaution.

For Chukwuemeka, the timing could hardly be worse. He had only just rejoined Dortmund’s pre-season camp after an extended break following the World Cup and had targeted these early friendlies to stake a claim for more minutes than he enjoyed last season.

The Vienna-born midfielder, long part of England’s youth setup, switched association to Austria in March, taking advantage of his eligibility through birth. The decision was quickly rewarded: he earned a place in the ÖFB squad for the World Cup in North America and featured off the bench in three of Austria’s four matches.

His last outing at the tournament came in the round of 32, when he was introduced at half-time in the 3-0 defeat to eventual world champions Spain at the start of July. From there, the focus turned to Dortmund – and to proving he could translate that international exposure into a stronger club role.

Old worries resurface

Knee issues are not a new chapter in his Dortmund story. When Chukwuemeka first arrived at BVB at the start of 2025, he carried knee problems with him, but over the past season he largely kept those recurring concerns under control.

His 2025/26 campaign underlined that progress: 38 appearances in all competitions, three goals, two assists. Not yet a guaranteed starter, but clearly moving towards a more prominent place in the squad.

That is why this setback, whatever the eventual diagnosis, stings. Just as he looked ready to build on a solid year and a World Cup platform, his body has again raised a question he thought he had begun to answer.

A tour clouded by knocks and storms

Chukwuemeka’s exit was not the first injury scare of Dortmund’s trip to Japan. Earlier in the week, BVB had already stumbled to a 1-0 defeat against Cerezo Osaka, a flat performance compounded by another enforced substitution.

In that match, young centre-back Filippo Mane came off with thigh problems. The issue did not initially appear severe, but it was serious enough to keep him out of the squad entirely for the game against Tokyo.

Even the weather turned against Dortmund on Saturday. Just past the half-hour mark, monsoon-like rain crashed down and a local thunderstorm warning forced the referee to suspend play. Both teams headed back to the dressing rooms as the pitch took a pounding. After roughly 30 minutes, the skies relented and the friendly resumed.

For BVB, the journey now leads back to Dortmund, where the real work of pre-season will continue. The question is whether Carney Chukwuemeka will be part of it from day one – or watching, again, as his chance to step forward is put on hold.
