Carlos Alcaraz Calls on Tennis Authorities to Review Ball Choices After Laver Cup

Carlos Alcaraz played a key role in helping Team Europe reclaim the Laver Cup, finishing the event undefeated in London. He secured one doubles victory alongside Jakub Mensik against Alexander Bublik and Taylor Fritz, plus a singles win over Fritz, contributing crucial points to the team's success.

Although scheduled to face Alex de Minaur on the third day, the title was clinched by Alexander Zverev before that match took place.

Discussion on Court Conditions at the Laver Cup

After their triumph, Alcaraz and Mensik addressed questions about the playing conditions at the O2 Arena, which featured a slow, indoor hard court. The event does not offer ATP ranking points but counts matches towards players' head-to-head records.

When asked about the speed and style of play, Mensik described the surface as one of the slowest hard courts he's encountered this year, making it challenging to find rhythm. He emphasized how his game, built around serve and heavy groundstrokes, struggled to finish points due to these conditions. Mensik also criticized the balls used, describing them as "not that good" and contributing to the slow pace.

Alcaraz shared his thoughts too, saying he doesn't mind slower courts because his serve isn’t particularly powerful. He reflected on conversations with Yannick Noah and others about how tennis has evolved, noting courts have slowed down over time. Still, he believes the real issue lies with the balls rather than the courts themselves.

"We can see during many tournaments how the ball’s reaction from the court is totally different. The ball becomes super big, and it’s a totally different game when it’s new balls. We play two or three games with those balls, you have to adapt yourself the best you can," said Alcaraz.

He made a direct appeal to tennis officials, asking them to ensure the best possible balls are selected for each court and tournament. Alcaraz stressed the importance of matching balls to the playing surface to maintain consistent and fair conditions for competitors.

Looking Ahead: Busy Schedule and Next Challenges

Whether the authorities will heed Alcaraz's request remains uncertain, but his concerns echo those of several top players grappling with ball and court inconsistencies. The rapid ATP calendar leaves little room for adjustment between events, a challenge Alcaraz has managed well throughout his career.

Following his Laver Cup success, Alcaraz heads to Tokyo for the Japan Open, where he is the defending champion. His adaptability and skill remain on full display as he transitions back into competitive action.
